Baricentrale - riqualificazione area ferroviaria
Short description of the intervention
The project was born with the idea of solving the huge debate around the creation of a city park that connects different parts of the city. The area close to the railway will be regenerated thanks to an above-ground park. This solution will allow to have a new green space in the city, and an additional panoramic view that will be experienced thanks to a new cycling path. In this way the whole area that surrounds the rails of the central station will be regenerated, providing at the same time an attempt to mend the urban and social fabric. (Ref.1.)

Implementation activities
The company Fuksas is in charge of implementing the project, as they have won the contest established by the city of Bari. The main activities will consist in the extension of the existing park for 3 km above the central railway, in the central part of the city and the creation of recreational and commerical activities within the new park. Without burying the rail track, the project aims at the rebirth of a strongly degraded area and pass through a large elevated park, 3 km long with an east-west bike path. (Ref.1.)

The city of Bari implemented a general plan for urban regeneration process. As the area of the railway station was identified as one of those needing intervention, the municipality established a contest for private companies to design new solutions. The Fuskas studio won the contest, and they are responsible to implement the project they designed. There is still a debate on the financial duties of private actors, for example those owning the railway infrastructure (Ref. 1&3.)

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
Parts of the park will cover derelict areas and they'll restructure the green spaces allowing more trees to be planted (Ref. 1) ; the urban effect of the heat island is reduced; the infiltration of run-off rainwater increases; No other data mentioned (Ref.2)
Description of economic benefits
At the south west part of the park the city of music will be built. The project proposes to shape a genuine city of music providing for the enlargement of about 2000 square meters of the conservatory with a new building that will house a 400-seat auditorium and music school. Furthermore it is also planned to build an area for outdoor concerts with 400 seats. The park of music because of the new structure planned by the master plan is easily accessible from the city center. (Ref.1)
Description of social and cultural benefits
The NBS allows urban spaces to connect with positive effects in terms of social interaction and well-being (Ref.1). Ratio square meters/ inhabitants = 5,1 sqm/in (Ref.3.). This means that for each inhabitant of the city there will be 5.1 sqm of green area available with the new park (Ref.2.)

August 2020, Update: While browsing the data on the internet I encountered many articles claiming that from 2013-2014 there were protests coming from the community against this particular NBS. Some members of the neighborhood requested a bigger role in the project. More information can be found bellow:
