Native title of the NBS intervention
Metrodom Panoráma
Short description of the intervention
Metrodom Panorama is a private investment containing four 17-storey residential buildings. Following the model of Bosco Verticale of Milan, the facades of the buildings will be created as vertical forests. In the balconies of the buildings 3 to 6 meter high trees are planned to be planted. The construction was finished and the buildings were opened for residents in 2020. As the building is still very new, the green elements of the building are not fully grown in their size, but in 3-4 years the buildings of Metrodom Panorama will be covered with especially lush vegetation. Goals of the intervention
The main goals of the project include:
- building a residential complex with 650 apartments for the purpose of investment;
- standing out of the average new-built residential complexes in many ways (Reference 1);
- creating an impressive, visually appealing building;
- having green as a dominant feature of the buildings;
- creating a unity of the building and greenery (Reference 2);
- help with local climate regulation (Reference 6);
- address air quality regulation;
- improve water management.
Quantitative targets
- 170 trees will be planted on the facades of the four building blocks;
- three kilometres of shrubbery (some 10,000 plants) in window-boxes running along with the balconies;
- smaller plants will also be planted in the stone boxes around the trunks of the trees;
- the dozens of trees and hundreds of bushes will be planted in the streets surrounding the buildings (Reference 2).

Implementation activities
Extensive green roofs have been implemented on all four buildings to improve air quality, create green spaces and improve the thermal insulation quality of the buildings. A rainwater collection system has also been installed with the goal of utilizing rainwater for irrigation and decreasing the strain on the drainage systems. More than 4,600 shrubs and 300 trees were planted. (Reference 6) The investors planted a diverse selection of plant species, with the goal of appearing natural, as they would appear in a natural ecosystem. (Reference 2)

The investors made a decision that the development project would follow the model of the Bosco Verticale in Milan: "Green walls, greenery planted on facades can be seen elsewhere, however, the magnitude of greenery and quality of plants on our building have only one predecessor in the whole of Europe, the Bosco Verticale („Vertical Forest") in Milan. Unlike the building in Italy, our project is not only one luxury office building, but an entire residential complex" (Reference 2).

Giving the buildings a good thermal insulation ability.
Which of the involved actors was motivated by this model?
Type of innovation
Please specify technological innovation
The project applies a relatively new concept of vertical forest on the facades of the building, which is originated from Milan. Metrodom Panorama is the first attempt for planting trees on balconies, which required the development of special building structure and technology for the sustainability of trees (Reference 3). As the documents of the project explain: "[t]rees will be planted in one cubic meter pots, the diameter of window-boxes for the shrubbery is 40x40 cms in size providing lot more space and soil for the vegetation to grow taller than in traditional window-boxes. Multi-circuit automated irrigation system provides for water and nutrient supply, residents do not have to (and must not) attend to and cultivate the vegetation" (Reference 2).
Please specify novelty level of the innovation
The intervention was inspired by the "bosco verticale" in Milan (Reference 3).

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
Because the buildings have only recently been handed over in 2020, only some of the anticipated results have been observed. (Reference 8) The evaporation effect, the ability of plants to offer shade and to sequestrate carbon have created a unique microclimate for the house. (Reference 6) The green roofs have played an important role in increasing the thermal insulation ability of the houses and in the treatment and utilization of precipitation, and thus easing the load on the sewage system.
