Ecological and Citizen Restoration in Carbet (RECC)

Resthasurhastion ecoLogique et citoyenne hasu Chasrbet

Context

A nesting habitat for sea turtles , the Carbet coastline is subject to numerous pressures : the  retreat of the coastline , light pollutionwaste and reduction in vegetation .

Endangered species, sea turtles have, depending on the species, preferential nesting habitats  : while leatherback turtles mainly lay their eggs in the sand, hawksbill turtles prefer the shelter of low, dense vegetation.

The coastline is also a place where many uses intersect  , whether recreational, economic and/or subsistence. Therefore
, it was important to us to take into account the opinions of the user communities who occupy this space: fishermen , restaurateurs , residents and tourists .

These uses are threatened in the same way as the spawning habitat by coastal erosion, itself accentuated by increasing urbanization

This urbanization, in addition to reducing their spawning habitat, generates light pollution which affects  spawning females and the wrasse at the time of their emergence which are located using the reflection of the moon.

The RECC project is inspired by the feedback from the Véti'Vert project , led by L'Asso-Mer, the ONF and the town of Case Pilote in 2019, which aimed to revegetate the back beach, decompact the soil and protect Vétiver beach. This project highlighted the need for a more comprehensive approach, including the issue of erosion and reducing pressures, but also to work more with citizens and stakeholders in the municipality to increase the benefits of this type of project  .

The objectives of the RECC project are:

Reduce anthropogenic pressures (light pollution, waste, etc.)

Rehabilitating sea turtle nesting habitats

Fighting against the retreat of the coastline

Take into account the socio-economic and cultural uses of the beach

Concretely

The project will last 3 years and will end at the end of January 2027. It will take place on the Carbet beach from Marouba to the harbor. The main areas of the project are:

1.

Ecological and social diagnosis

Social diagnosis : survey of residents of Carbet and socio-professionals (  e.g. restaurateurs , fishermen ) in order to better understand their perceptions and take into account opinions on the location of areas to be revegetated .

Ecological diagnosis : Synthesis of data already present on the territory to have a global understanding of the issues and pressures present on the Carbet coastline. Collection of missing data.

2.

Pressure reduction

Reducing upstream pressures is a necessary step in any ecological restoration project, involving data collection, awareness-raising, and support for practice changes. This is followed by proposals for concrete actions to be implemented by the various project stakeholders: the town hall, socio-professionals, and residents.

3.

Revegetation

In this project, we take care of all the stages of revegetation with the help of our volunteers and the Carbet classes (primary and secondary).

This includes:

  • Seed collection
  • Preparing the seedlings
  • Repotting the plants
  • Planting on the beach

The seedlings and plants are then kept in nurseries set up in schools or at our volunteers' homes before being planted.

4.

Awareness and participatory science

Awareness raising is integrated into every stage of the project, particularly within the schools and the Carbet college, as it is essential to its sustainability.

As part of this initiative, an educational trail will be set up along the coastline. It will include participatory science terminals and a tidal pool, allowing for the observation and analysis of the various pressures affecting the coastline (erosion, light pollution, sediment dynamics, waste, and vegetation changes). These terminals will be accompanied by information panels to raise public awareness of these issues.

In addition to this course, several actions were carried out:

  • A meeting for exchange and awareness-raising with municipal agents.
  • Collection and characterization of waste at several control sites throughout the project.
