Seville Tree Planting Campaigns 2020-2024
The City of Seville has carried out four tree planting campaigns between 2020 and 2024, aiming to meet the goals of its Urban Tree Management Plan for Seville [Ref. 2-7]. The intervention as described here is based on the planting campaigns to date, but as the Management Plan spans from 2019 to 2039, more campaigns can expected in the future. The tree management plan aims to provide guidelines for the planning of trees in the city to maximise their value and minimize conflicts. As part of the process, the current state of the tree population in Seville has been evaluated. The management plan describes the ecosystem services of trees related to climate adaptation, biodiversity and public health. It also identifies challenges and conflicts that may arise due to urban trees and their management [Ref. 1]. The plan has a goal to increase the tree cover in Seville by 5 % over 20 years, which leads to the ambition of planting 5000 trees yearly and the tree planting campaigns over the last years. Between 2020 and 2024, about 1000-5000 trees have been planted each year [Ref. 1-5].
Cortez Park Tree Planting Project
Phoenix is one of the hottest cities in the United States, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C (104°F) for more than 90 days each year. The urban heat island effect is severe here, posing a significant health risk. Many communities in Phoenix lack equal access to shade cover—often, the impact of extreme heat disproportionately affects low-income neighborhoods that lack resources for tree planting and maintenance. In contrast, wealthier areas tend to have more trees and are visibly greener, which helps reduce the heat residents experience.
To address these disparities, the City of Phoenix partnered with SRP, a not-for-profit public power utility, to launch the "Right Tree, Right Place" program in 2018. This initiative aims to bring shade relief to areas most in need, such as parks, public transit stops, and schools, while replacing older trees that interfere with SRP power lines. SRP and the city work together to identify trees that pose risks to overhead power lines, and for each tree removed, three new trees are planted—either in a different location or with a species better suited to coexist with power lines.
One of the program’s notable projects took place in West Phoenix’s Cortez Park, where 24 drought-tolerant trees from four different species were planted. This diversity helps protect the trees against pests and other natural threats, ensuring their longevity and resilience. Through initiatives like these, the "Right Tree, Right Place" program contributes to Phoenix’s larger goal of developing a robust, biodiverse urban forest. By expanding green infrastructure, the city aims to reduce local temperatures, improve air quality, and create cooler, healthier neighborhoods for all residents. (1-8)

Warrendale Bio-retention Flower-gardens
"The Neighborhood, Environment & Water Research Collaborations for Green Infrastructure (NEW-GI)" project in Warrendale, Detroit, aims to advance green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) knowledge and practice in legacy cities by integrating research on water quality, community well-being, governance, and ecological design. This collaborative effort, involving community members, government entities, and academic researchers, seeks to develop evidence-based strategies for sustainable stormwater management while enhancing urban landscapes and improving residents' quality of life.
In its first phase (2014-2015), the project created bioretention four bioretention gardens, each on two vacant residential properties in the Warrendale neighborhood. in Detroit's Warrendale neighborhood. These sites, constructed by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) on vacant lots owned by the Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA), were monitored for water quality, and resident surveys were conducted to gauge the gardens' impact on neighborhood satisfaction and stormwater management.
The second phase (2016-2019) expanded the scope to refine GSI designs to reduce maintenance needs and further assess their effects on water management and community well-being. It also explored governance structures that impact GSI success, both in Detroit and other legacy cities, contributing to the development of guidance documents for GSI planning and decision-making.

The Line Park: Redeveloping old Railway Tracks
The "Line Park" project in Belgrade aims to create a continuous green belt spanning 4.6 kilometres and covering over 48 hectares. As such, the project will revitalize the former railway corridor from "Beton Hala", just below the Belgrade Fortress, to the Pancevac Bridge. Inspired by notable urban parks like New York's "High Line", Moscow's "Zagrađe," and Toronto's "Rail Corridor," it will become a major recreational destination and also help to alleviate the pressures from the city's heavy air pollution and summer heat (Ref. 5, 6).
The park will be divided into ten thematic sections dedicated to aromatic plant and flower gardens, urban gardening and beekeeping, sports facilities, a newly built university campus and more. Additionally, there will be an amphitheatre and facilities for outdoor education. To further integrate green infrastructure, new buildings will have green roofs and walls (Ref. 2,5). Ultimately, the park integrates a number of amenities into the entire city.
The development of the park also introduced innovative co-creation mechanisms in terms of governance and planning. Since Belgrade is part of the multinational CLEVER Cities Initiative, the city's Secretariat for Environmental Protection suggested the use of the site as a pilot test for introducing nature-based solutions in urban planning and with diverse stakeholders' input. Several workshops, focus groups, and consultations took place between 2019 and 2021, which facilitated the diversity of ideas that have been adopted into the official construction plan (Ref. 1, 2). Despite these successes, civil society groups raise concerns over the extraordinary cost of 70 million euros, displacement of Roma communities and the interest of real estate developers that may undermine the project's original cause (Ref. 3, 8).

Green Corridor "Lazaro Cardenas" in New Belgrade
Named after the former Mexican president Lázaro Cárdenas, this green corridor project stretches over 4,5 km throughout one of the most densely populated areas in Belgrade. It was first built in the 1970s, connecting the building blocks 45, 44 and 70 of Novi Beograd, but has deteriorated since then (Ref. 4,9). Given the fact that close to 40.000 people live in the area which its highly vulnerable to climate change, action was taken to fully reconstruct the corridor for the benefit of local and surrounding residents (Ref. 3,4).
The project was implemented in three phases, according to the three blocks adjacent to the construction site starting in 2019. During the third implementation phase in 2022, however, major delays occurred due to disagreements with the local neighbourhood association "Common Action Block 70 and 70a", which demanded to be taken into consideration in the project's design (Ref. 2,5). Despite some cooperation between the responsible authority (Greenery Belgrade) and the association, demands could not be met (Ref. 5). In the end, the project was carried out as originally planned by the authorities, with a delay of approximately one year. Ultimately, the green corridor provides ample amenities for sports (bicycle lanes, basketball courts, playgrounds, etc.) and recreational activities (benches, chess area) as well as low-barrier infrastructure for all age groups (Ref. 9).

The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail project aims to transform the existing creek into a valuable community asset by developing a multi-use greenway trail (Ref 1). This greenway will connect various parts of the city through walking and biking paths, linking neighbourhoods, parks, and commercial districts while providing access to unique natural areas (Ref 2). The creek having been adandonned for decades (Ref 5), the initiative seeks to turn 3 Mile Creek (3MC) into a vibrant natural corridor that fosters recreation, education, and economic activities (Ref 1, Ref 2). The project aims also at reducing pollutants in the waterway, restoring natural stream channels, and maintaining flood protection (Ref 1).
The 3MC Greenway Trail is expected to become a key feature of Mobile's urban landscape, offering numerous benefits. These include enhancing community health, both mental and physical (Ref 2), and stimulating the local economy by increasing property values, tax revenues, and opportunities for recreation-related businesses and job development (Ref 2). Additionally, the trail will improve community connectivity by linking neighbourhoods, parks, and schools, thereby fostering a stronger sense of community and better access to public spaces (Ref 2). Lastly, the project will contribute to environmental restoration through stormwater management, pollution reduction, and natural habitat preservation (Ref 2).

This neglect is further compounded by the increasing frequency and intensity of severe storms, which have exposed the city's vulnerabilities in stormwater management, leading to regular flooding.
To address these challenges, the "Alley Activation" project, launched in 2020 by a team of researchers at the UM-Dearborn in partnership with local residents and organizations, seeks to transform neglected alleys into vibrant greenways, rain gardens, and pollinator habitats. The project focuses on cleaning and greening alleys located in 2 neighborhoods namely Littlefield and McNichols. The activated alleys are bounded by Littlefield, Hartwell, McNichols and Outer Drive roads. These roads enclose an area of 141,436 square meters, located in the Bethune community and the Hubbell Puritan neighborhoods. Alley Activation involves clearing blocked alleyways and turning them into inviting, productive spaces that support sustainability goals. These revitalized alleys serve as a "green capillary system," contributing to the city's environmental, cultural, and social well-being.
