Canal restoration in Cagliari

The Cagliari Canal project is an initiative aimed at revitalizing and transforming the urban and natural landscape of the Cagliari Metropolitan Area in Sardinia. The project is rooted in the city's strategic metropolitan plan and seeks to restore and enhance the navigability of the Terramaini-La Palma canal, which had become disused and neglected over time​ (3,4). The primary goal of the Cagliari Canal project is to develop a connected, innovative, and sustainable urban environment by re-establishing the canal as a green and blue infrastructure​ (2). It aims to provide alternative, sustainable mobility options, improve connectivity between municipalities, and enhance the natural and urban environments. It strives to foster a sense of community by creating a shared space for residents and integrating modern amenities that align with environmental sustainability (1,4). It involved a highly participatory process, emphasizing community involvement from the initial planning stages. The Metropolitan Authority of Cagliari, in collaboration with local stakeholders, launched a series of consultations to gather public input on the canal's design and function​(3). These consultations were part of a broader initiative called LabMet, the Metropolitan Laboratory for Innovation, which facilitated the collection of ideas and feedback (1). The project was partly developed in response to the increasing environmental challenges faced by Cagliari, including the need to adapt to climate change. The canal's revitalization is seen as a key measure for enhancing the city's resilience to climate-related risks, such as flooding and heat waves​(1). By restoring the canal and its surrounding areas, the project aims to mitigate these risks through improved water management, reducing pollution, and the creation of green spaces that can absorb excess rainwater and provide cooling effects​ (2)

Park at the triangular track

The Park am Gleisdreieck is a public urban park in the city centre of Berlin, spanning more than 30 hectares across three individual sites (Ostpark, Westpark, Flaschenhalspark) on former railway tracks. The landscape of the Park am Gleisdreieck is characterised by the central, extensive lawn and meadow areas, which are bordered by woodland-like areas - the so-called track wilderness - as well as various park trees and crossed by wide paths or old railway tracks. The park space features various recreational activities for sports and play as well as community gardens for intercultural exchange (Ref. 12). Being abandoned after WW II, the land rewilded and after being partially opened to the public in 2011, the primary aim of the maintenance and development measures was to harmonise the interests of nature conservation and recreational use. (Ref. 1; Ref. 3)
Many of the plant species in the Park am Gleisdreieck once travelled a long way by train. This is what makes the biodiversity in the park so special. It is a wild mixture of long-established Berlin plants and exotic species that specialise in dry, nutrient-poor soils. The park is part of Berlin's open space network, which extends from Tiergarten to Schöneberger Südgelände. It therefore makes a significant contribution to connecting habitats. (Ref. 1)
Initiatives of citizens have been working for years for the realisation of a park on the former railroad site at Gleisdreick, and so the residents have been involved in the park planning and design in an intensive dialogue process from the beginning and are still involved in the park management. (Ref. 2) The opening of the park served as a compensation measure for the construction of the urban development projects at Potsdamer Platz and aimed at increasing accessible green space in a densely and rapidly built urban environment. (Ref. 4)

Green Blue Axis of Sintra, Oeiras and Amadora

The Green and Blue Axis (Eixo Verde e Azul, EVA) is an inter-municipal green corridor project connecting the municipalities of Sintra, Oeiras, and Amadora through a 15-kilometre green ecological axis along the Jamor River (Ref 2). It aims to renaturalize the river, improve water quality, and control flooding while promoting sustainable mobility through pedestrian and cycling routes (Ref 5). The project also enhances public access to green spaces and cultural heritage sites, such as the Queluz National Palace (Ref 6). EVA supports the Lisbon Metropolitan Area’s regional strategy for climate change adaptation, risk prevention, and low-carbon economy (Ref 4). Funded by the European Regional Development Fund and municipal budgets, the project has an overall investment of €11 million (Ref 1). EVA exemplifies inter-municipal cooperation, overcoming policy conflicts to achieve shared environmental, social, and economic goals, making it a model for integrated territorial development (Ref 4). The project’s long-term impact includes reduced carbon footprint and increased territorial cohesion.

Green Corridor "Lazaro Cardenas" in New Belgrade

Named after the former Mexican president Lázaro Cárdenas, this green corridor project stretches over 4,5 km throughout one of the most densely populated areas in Belgrade. It was first built in the 1970s, connecting the building blocks 45, 44 and 70 of Novi Beograd, but has deteriorated since then (Ref. 4,9). Given the fact that close to 40.000 people live in the area which its highly vulnerable to climate change, action was taken to fully reconstruct the corridor for the benefit of local and surrounding residents (Ref. 3,4).
The project was implemented in three phases, according to the three blocks adjacent to the construction site starting in 2019. During the third implementation phase in 2022, however, major delays occurred due to disagreements with the local neighbourhood association "Common Action Block 70 and 70a", which demanded to be taken into consideration in the project's design (Ref. 2,5). Despite some cooperation between the responsible authority (Greenery Belgrade) and the association, demands could not be met (Ref. 5). In the end, the project was carried out as originally planned by the authorities, with a delay of approximately one year. Ultimately, the green corridor provides ample amenities for sports (bicycle lanes, basketball courts, playgrounds, etc.) and recreational activities (benches, chess area) as well as low-barrier infrastructure for all age groups (Ref. 9).
The project was initiated by President Aleksandar Vučić and supported by the current mayor of Belgrade, Šapić, who both have roots in the district (Ref. 4,6).

Tres Rios, Arizona Ecosystem Restoration Project

The Tres Rios Ecosystem Restoration Project is an ambitious initiative aimed at revitalizing a seven-mile stretch of the Salt and Gila Rivers in Phoenix, Arizona. The Tres Rios Environmental Restoration project involves the rehabilitation of nearly 700 acres in and around the Salt River, restoring a vital wetland and riparian habitat. Initially conceived in 1993 to tackle water quality issues and improve flood control, the project gained significant traction in the 2000s through a partnership between the City of Phoenix and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Funding was structured with 65 percent from the USACE and 35 percent from the City of Phoenix and the Sub-Regional Operating Group Members, including Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, and Mesa.
The Tres Rios project encompasses habitat restoration, flood control, and recreational development, with the primary objectives being to restore a degraded ecosystem, enhance water quality, and provide new recreational spaces. Construction involved relocating 1.6 million cubic yards of earth to shape three large wetland zones and two deep-water retention basins. Additionally, 18,000 feet of underground water lines and 600 feet of 84-inch fiberglass effluent pipelines were installed. To establish a thriving wetland habitat, the project coordinated the planting of over 300,000 aquatic and terrestrial plants.
Habitat restoration efforts re-establish native vegetation and create wetland areas that support local biodiversity. The lush and scenic Tres Rios is now home to more than 150 different species of birds and animals like muskrats, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, bobcats, and beavers. By using treated wastewater to sustain the ecosystem, the project reduces dependency on natural water sources, thereby helping to mitigate water scarcity. The Tres Rios Ecosystem Restoration Project serves as a model for sustainable urban ecological initiatives, combining environmental health with community benefits. (1-8, 10-13)

Tbilisi Urban Forest (Narikala Ridge Forest)

The Tbilisi Urban Forest is an ecological restoration project of 5,5 ha spanning two pilot areas initiated in 2020. Located on Mtatsminda ridge around Tbilisi, it is part of a larger reforestation effort within the 700-ha forest territory (Ref. 1,2). The project is funded by the Cartu Foundation and led by the Development and Environment Foundation along with Tbilisi City Hall. Restoration is undertaken to addresses significant challenges such as forest dieback caused by pest infestations, climate change adaptation as well as the creation of recreational infrastructure (Ref. 3,5). Through collaboration among interdisciplinary scientists and urban planners, a novel reforestation strategy has been developed that integrates patches of locally sourced plant communities tailored to diverse soil and slope conditions. This approach incorporates existing trees with new saplings, carefully grafted into existing soil pockets, and focuses on a biodiverse palette of endemic and climate-adapted species (Ref. 1,5). While the project implementation could not be carried out as planned, lacking public participartory due to Covid 19, still 100 jobs were created locally (Ref. 2). Ultimately, the Urban Forest project will enhance ecological connectivity, biodiversity and tourism and also serve the public as an improtant recreational site (Ref. 1,2).
