Rewitalizacja stawów przy ul. Marczukowskiej
Short description of the intervention
The project revitalized two old ponds – previous industrial and derelict area – and created two new ponds on the Marczukowska street in the city of Bialystok. The investment in its current shape is a tourist attraction and a valuable ecosystem for birds and amphibians. The project resulted in the increase of biodiversity in the area (additional ponds for the breeding of amphibians, two nesting islands not accessible to the public), and more effective management of the local water resources (cleaning and deepening of ponds, restoring an outflow for the excess water directly to the Biała river). Finally, it is a popular place with publicly open educational trails and bicycle paths [2,3,4].

3) Creating an educational trail;
4) Clearing the previous derelict area and creating conditions for the local ecosystem to flourish [4].

Quantitative targets
1) Revitalization of ponds on the total area of 4000 square meters;
2) Building 2 additional ponds for the breeding of amphibians [2]
3) Creating 2 nesting islands for local birds [3].
Monitoring indicators defined
1) Increase in biodiversity;
2) Improved access to the recreational area around the ponds [3,4].
What types of restoration goals are / were defined for the NBS intervention?
Implementation activities
- Revitalization of the two existing ponds [4];
- Ponds were cleaned, elutriated and deepened [3];
- Building two additional ponds for the breeding of amphibians [2];
- Reconstruction of the causeway destroyed by local beavers. Creating winter breeding and the island for waterbirds in the area [4];
- Creating two nesting islands, covered with native vegetation [3];
- Designating a protected area (not accessible for the public) [3];
- Cleaning and drying of the pheasant below the bridge at Marczukowska Street, which will allow the outflow of the excess waters to the Biała river [2];
- Building new paths, an ornithological tower, an observation deck and a gazebo [4];
- Constructing benches, bins and bicycle racks. Creating a separate barbecue area [4].

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
The project revitalized two old ponds – previous industrial and derelict area – and created two new ponds, which are protected and not accessible by the public. The islands are a valuable ecosystem for native birds and amphibians, which can be also observed from a safe distance from a tall lookout tower. The control of invasive alien spieces was realised through the reconstruction of a causeway destroyed by local beavers, which had domintaed the area before the revitalization. The project resulted in the increase of biodiversity in the area and more effective management of the local water resources. The ponds are clean and deeper and there is an outflow for the excess water directly to the Biała river, which protects the area from flooding [2,3,4,5].
Economic impacts
Description of economic benefits
unknown
Description of social and cultural benefits
The park is a popular tourist and leisure attraction in the city, with the implementation of benches, a bicycle path, barbecue area, a tall ornithological tower, a lookout point and an educational trail. This educational trail offers opportunities for the locals to know more about this area as it describes the local ecosystem and the importance of the protection measures employed in the park. There is also a parking lot and a bicycle rack at the entrance to the park, which enhances the accessibility of the area [2,5].
Type of reported impacts
Indicators
Increase in biodiversity, successful breeding and restoration of the native species and their ecosystem;
Increased public access and popularity of the area;
Water quality;
Flood risk reduction [3,4,5].
