Luttertal in Brackwede
Short description of the intervention
On the derelict industrial plant in Brackwede, which was independent until 1973, a large leisure facility with an extensive range of leisure activities was planned. However, due to more recent findings, this direction was rejected and a natural green corridor was created with unique biotope areas that had developed over time from the abandoned bleaching ponds and meadows. The Luttertal is located in Bielefeld Quelle, south of the
The industrial plant in Brackwede was intentionally abandoned since 1973, due to the local municipality recently cancelled the project of the redevelopment of the area and kept it intact. Till now, a “natural green area developed with very interesting biotope areas, which had evolved over time” at the abandoned site.

What types of restoration goals are / were defined for the NBS intervention?
What activities are implemented to realize the restoration goals and targets?
Implementation activities
The city of Bielefeld declined the project of construction of the shopping center at the place of the former industrial production and let it develop naturally (1).
Until the 20th century wastewater coming from industrial activities was discharged to the ponds of the Luttertal in Brackwede. After the industrial activities were discontinued nature conquered back the area, while the contamination of the ponds continued due to untreated domestic waste water discharge. Following some civil protests against the pollution of the water, numerous discharges were discontinued in the following period and today the Lutter has a water quality II to II-III again, so it is only moderately polluted.

Please specify the "local regulation/strategy/plan"
The intervention was implemented according to a decision of the Bielefeld city government from 1973, however without any supporting regulations (1). According to the later regulations analysed, the notion of the "derelict area" started to be conceptualized as a space with positive environmental impact only in the 1990s. Accordingly, this initiative can be considered as a unique example of the early positive evaluations of the derelict sites in Bielefeld.

Type of innovation
Please specify social innovation
As a result of resistance to investment (erection of a shopping center), a green space was developed.

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
- Since the discontinuation of domestic and industrial wastewater discharge into the ponds located in the Luttertal in Brackwede, the water contamination has dropped (2).
- The Luttertal was transformed into a natural green area for relaxation and as a natural experience space for the citizens. A number of animals and plants can be observed here, such as the grey heron (2).
