Short description of the intervention
This NBS is implemented on a nature reserve site, Ciuperceni-Desa, a protected area that has habitat types with natural eutrophic lakes, oligotrophic seawaters, panonic salty marshes, sandy panonic meadows, low altitude meadows, clusters of walnut vegetation and white poplar and cultivated arable land. In 2016 the Romanian Government alongside an NGO developed a plan for its protection and conservation since locals complained that it is not taken care off accordingly, that the area became a dump for people to trow their garbage and that it affects the species (1, 2)

Habitats and biodiversity conservation: What types of conservation goals are / were defined for the NBS intervention?
Implementation activities
Enforcement of coercive measures for abandonment of waste, poaching and unsupervised wandering of domestic pigs in protected areas. However, there is a need for active cooperation and involvement of protected areas custodians, local councils and site owners. For that matter starting with 2012 a series of seminars were conducted where local schools were involved as well as citizens and repeated cleanings of the area emerged (2)

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
This NBS is still being implemented. A monitoring report was issued in 2016 when the implementation was in the 1st phase, but it was not followed by a report per se. This being said, the expectations regarding environmental benefits were very high for this project and they were related with a preservation and conservation of the 13 habitats present in the area and the reduction of loss in the ecosystem. These aspects are mentioned but they are not quantified, meaning there aren't indicators present to register the results, or at least they have not been made public as of 2020. (1)

Comments and notes
Comments
The ornithological significance of the floodplain area between Calafat and Ghidici is also due to the fact that it is part of the migratory route of birds moving along the Danube river, from the natal to the wintering and vice versa. Proof in this sense are birds marked with rings in nesting places and found in the ponds south of Calafat or Desa-Ciuperceni. Specialists say rings have been recovered from a dead black stork dead in Slovakia. In addition, a specimen of a ringed bearded sticker on both legs in Voievodina-Serbia was found immobilized in a fishing net on the Danube, near Desa. (2)
