Short description of the intervention
Together with the Office for Urban Greenery and Waters of the City of Leipzig, the charitable association Ökolöwe Leipzig started the green facades initiative "Kletterfix - Green Walls for Leipzig" in 2015. The project aims at creating awareness about the multiple benefits of urban green walls and inspiring action of tenants and landlords on private property. As a measure mandated by the Urban Clean Air Plan, green facades improve the urban microclimate, general living conditions and combat particulate matter pollution. On-site advice about suitable plants and maintenance is provided upon application and respective seeds for up to 5 plants are sent for free to the applicants by the city department (1, 3, 7).

Protect building facades, thus preserving their quality (12)
Description of environmental benefits
- Based on data from 2019, the organisation advised around 160 Leipzig residents and implemented around 80 greenery (11);
- The installed green facades within the framework of the project make a valuable contribution to the living environment. Where there is no space for street trees, climbing plants take over their functions in a space-saving and attractive manner (4);
- Climbing plants on house facades have been shown to regulate the microclimate in the area by providing cooling (12);
- The plants bind fine dust to their leaf surfaces and in this way clean the air urban dwellers breathe (12);
- The installed green facades contribute to the protection of species: birds such as sparrows find shelter and wild bees feast on the flowering plant species (12, 8).
Economic impacts
Description of economic benefits
- It also protects the building from excessive water logging of the gable and house walls. The green wall not only protects against the weather, but also against unwanted graffiti (12)

Description of social and cultural benefits
- The campaign shows positive functions of facade greening and motivates Leipzig residents to carry out their own greening (4)
- With professional advice and guided city tours to best practice examples of green facades contributes to the awareness-raising efforts on the importance and benefits of green walls.
