A Paceño, a Tree

The initiative consists of an afforestation campaign promoted by the local government of La Paz, with the objective of planting 10,000 trees and shrubs (1 & 2). Carried out between 2023 and 2024, the campaign included plantations across all the macrodistricts of La Paz (1). To ensure the campaign's success, the municipality encouraged the participation of volunteers from various institutions, such as public services, environmental groups, schools and universities, neighborhood associations, church groups, and even Army and Navy units (1 & 2). The trees play specific roles in mitigating climate change, improving air quality, reducing odors from nearby landfills, and decreasing the risk of landslides and soil erosion (3 & 4). Furthermore, the campaign aims to foster environmental awareness among citizens and replace trees lost due to illegal deforestation (1).

The species selected for planting were provided by EMAVERDE, the public company responsible for managing green spaces in the city. The selection included primarily native species, along with a few introduced ones, all chosen for their resilience to La Paz's varying climate conditions (1, 2 & 4). Given the challenging climate and difficult soil conditions, the municipality informed volunteers about the importance of maintaining the saplings, particularly during drought periods, to ensure their proper growth (1 & 2). The campaign also supported the municipality’s urban development plan (Plan Territorial de Desarrollo Integral "Para Vivir Bien") and the "Plan Integral de Recuperación de la Tormenta a la Esperanza," the latter developed in response to extreme rain events and floods that occurred during the campaign months (5).

Restoration of the Rio Mannu-Cixerri

In 2020, the Metropolitan City of Cagliari launched a project to enhance flood resilience and ecological integrity in the Mannu-Cixerri river system in southern Sardinia. The river traverses several communes within the metropolitan area, ultimately feeding into the Santa Gilla Lagoon, a vital wetland ecosystem west of the city.
The project, with a budget of €21 million, focuses on three key communes: Assemini, Decimomannu, and Uta. Rather than solely emphasizing structural flood defenses, the initiative integrates nature-based solutions (NbS) to mitigate flood risks while restoring riverine ecosystems. The Metropolitan City of Cagliari, in collaboration with the Sardinian Regional Public Works Department, is responsible for its implementation.
Key interventions include reinforcing and revegetating embankments, improving water flow along the Rio Mannu, and constructing new levee sections in a manner that enhances natural water retention. Additionally, the project involves upgrading bridges to facilitate better floodwater management. These measures align with the Sardinian Flood Risk Management Plan (PGRA) and aim to reduce flood hazards while promoting ecological benefits.
The project timeline began with a two-year preparation phase for the Preliminary Design Document, followed by a year-long tendering process for construction. These efforts represent a crucial step toward long-term flood resilience and environmental sustainability in the region. (Ref. 1, 2, 3)

Masthugg Park

Masthuggsparken is a planned park in the Masthuggskajen district, which is undergoing development and construction. The park will measure about 2000 m2, and serve as a green oasis and meeting place for locals. It will have ameneties such as benches and areas for play, and a noise barrier against a large nearby road. The park will connect to the adjacent square and street, making it accessible to visit. The street will be renovated to have more trees and plants, increasing green connectivity in the district. The park will be surrounded by trees and other plants, which are planted to promote biodiversity and be adapted to a changing climate [Ref. 1-5, 7]. The park is at a low point, where up to 800 m3 of stormwater will flow during heavy rainfall, reducing flood risk in the surroundings [Ref. 1, 2, 6]. The Masthuggskajen district has a sustainability program, establishing goals for green environments which the park will contribute to. Green areas should be accessible to the entire district and provide ecosystem services such as rainwater management, climate adaptation, biodiversity and recreation. The program was created by the City of Gothenburg in collaboration with construction companies active in the area and was supported by Citylab Action, a national competence program in sustainable urban development [Ref. 7]. The City of Gothenburg is the primary responsible for the park, which will be constructed between 2025 and 2026 [Ref. 1, 2, 4].

Corkagh Park

Corkagh Park, spanning 120 hectares, holds significant historical and cultural value for the local community of Clondalkin. The park offers an extensive range of facilities, including football pitches, a newly redeveloped playground, baseball pitches, cricket amenities, and a purpose-built road cycling track. Over the past two years, Corkagh Park has experienced a notable increase in footfall and usage as visitors are drawn to its expansive open spaces. With its rich vegetation, open wetlands, and rolling hills, Corkagh Park provides a unique environment that caters to both wildlife and human visitors. Since its establishment as a public park in 1986, the park’s vast open spaces have served the local community and attracted visitors from the broader region. Currently, Corkagh Park is surrounded by the Village of Clondalkin and nearby residential developments.
Currently the park goes through a redevelopment process that involves redesign of several areas including introduction of native vegetation. The enhancement of the park is led by the South Dublin County Council and will feature a central hub area at the heart of the park. This hub will feature a coffee shop, an event space, additional seating, and new play areas. Enhancements to the Fairy Woodland Trail will include additional play elements and seating, as well as a new pedestrian pathway linking the lakes, while maintaining and safeguarding the existing mature trees. The project also includes the felling of ash trees affected by Ash Dieback, with these trees being replaced by native specimens to sustain the park’s ecological integrity. Native edge planting buffers will be established to reduce noise from the N7 and promote local biodiversity. Additionally, the project will address the existing car parks by implementing necessary improvements to better accommodate the park’s visitors. (4, 6)

The Järnvåg Park

The park called Järnvågsparken will be constructed in the developing neighbourhood of Masthuggskajen as the main green space of the area, measuring about 8000 m2. The park will offer recreational activities for people living and working in the area, with spaces designated for rest, meetings, picnics, walking and play. For example, there will be a large playground, many different places to sit, grass lawns and a space to host cultural events in [Ref. 1-4]. The park will also be designed to manage stormwater and reduce flood risk [Ref. 5, 6]. The park will be built over an existing highway, turning it into a tunnel while reconnecting the new neighbourhood. The remaining future park area next to the road are currently parking spaces [Ref. 1, 4, 5]. The adjacent streets will also see more greening, increasing the connectivity of green spaces and mobility [Ref. 4-6]. The location on top of a tunnel limits the soil depth of the park, but the ambition is still to house a rich plant and animal life, including trees, providing ecosystem services [Ref. 1-6]. The project is managed by the City of Gothenburg [Ref. 1, 7].

Phoenix Park

The Phoenix Park initiative was carried out by the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iași in partnership with the Iași Communitarian Foundation, the BorgWagner Fund, and the Municipality of Iași. It involved the rehabilitation of a green space within the university campus. Covering an area of 3,000 square meters, the renovation was based on the winning design from a student competition focused on improving campus spaces.
The park was designed to include facilities for physical exercise (calisthenics equipment), recreation (badminton court and ping-pong table), and social interaction spaces. It also serves as a buffer to reduce noise from the surrounding areas.
The total cost of the project amounted to 121,200 euros, with the university covering infrastructure expenses, the municipality providing the labor for rehabilitation, and the private fund contributing 15,150 euros. The implementation of the design was overseen by the student designer and coordinated by the NGO and the university’s Association of Student Architects.
This initiative is part of a larger urban regeneration project by the university, in collaboration with the municipality and the Communitarian Foundation, where several campus green spaces are being rehabilitated based on student designs. The overarching goal is to enhance students' quality of life and promote healthy lifestyles through the creation of green spaces during their time at the university. (1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 13, p. 92)

The Three Mile Creek Hydrological Restoration

The Three Mile Creek Hydrological Restoration project is taking place in one historic channel of the Three Mile Creek, located east of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, and covering approximately 1,800 linear feet (Ref 3). This project, led by the City of Mobile, aims to remove sediment from the stream channel. This segment of the Creek was bypassed with a straight channel in the early 1980s to control flooding in the area, thus accelerating the accumulation of sediments in the historic channel (Ref 1).
The project's goal is to restore and maintain the natural flow to the historic channel and create a connection to the City and County's Blueway initiatives (Ref 3). This will improve habitat conditions and water quality and help to protect the area’s estuarine and marine water resources (Ref 8). It will also contribute to revitalizing the Three Mile Creek Watershed and provide increased recreational opportunities for citizens, like kayaking and canoeing (Ref 6). Construction work occurred in 2022 and 2023 (Ref 3).
The Three Mile Creek Hydrological Restoration is a key component of the Mobile Bay Shore Habitat Conservation and Acquisition Initiative, which focuses on acquiring, restoring, and preserving habitats, including riparian, wetland, and upland areas that support various fish and wildlife species affected by the environmental disasters of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010 (Ref 1). The project spans three critical areas: 450 acres within the Three Mile Creek Watershed (as detailed in this project profile), 300 acres in the Dog River Watershed, and 40 acres of bay shore property in the Garrows Bend Watershed (with the latter two areas being part of separate initiatives) (Ref 4).

Maskinparken

Maskinparken is a new park covering 3700 m2 in the Lindholmen district, a new neighbourhood in a previous industrial/harbour area [Ref. 5]. The park is described as a well-needed green oasis or green lung in the developing area. The park finished construction in 2022 and is intended to provide access to green space for people living and working nearby. It is also designed as a blue-green stormwater management solution, where about 500 m3 of rainwater can be stored in the lower areas during heavy rainfall. Stormwater will be leaked from surrounding grey areas to the park to protect them from flooding. The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket) has highlighted the park as a good example of climate adaptation in urban planning. The park has a variety of plants such as different tree species and flowering meadows, and plants that can withstand being soaked in the lower areas. Plants can grow in different landscape structures, such as hills and a pergola. The park also has amenities such as benches and lights, which are designed to mirror the style of the surrounding, older industrial brick buildings [Ref. 1-4].

Recovery initiatives for the Ciénaga de las Quintas

The Ciénaga de las Quintas is a coastal wetland located alongside one of Cartagena’s main roads, adjacent to the public market square and situated between the Jiménez and Bazurto Bridges. It is home to two predominant mangrove species (Ref 1). The wetland currently faces pollution problems because it is used for the disposal of solid waste, such as plastics and construction materials, and it receives wastewater and household garbage from nearby residences. Las Quintas is also the main waste disposal area for the Bazurto market, which handles 43,430 tons of food products each month (ref 3). The recovery initiatives for the Ciénaga de las Quintas are led by the Environmental Public Establishment of Cartagena (EPA Cartagena) in collaboration with other public institutions, the private sector, and citizens, with the main goal of achieving the ecological restoration of the city's water bodies and to maintain and preserve our mangrove ecosystems (ref 2). Since 2020, key implementation activities have included the removal of solid waste, planting of native tree species, dismantling of informal structures within the mangrove zone, and the rehabilitation of areas previously occupied by debris (Refs 4, 5).

Requalification of Viale Trieste

In 2022, the municipality of Cagliari launched a project to revitalize Viale Trieste, one of its avenues, by redesigning its roads and pedestrian areas and adding new green spaces. The project covers approximately 1,300 meters and 36,500 square meters, and will be completed in two phases, each focusing on different sections of the avenue. With a budget of 12 million euros, funded by municipal, national, and EU resources, the aim is to transform Viale Trieste into a vibrant, accessible, and attractive space for everyone.

The renewal will introduce new green spaces and improved drainage systems to enhance soil permeability. As part of this, some trees will be relocated to other areas of the city to address root issues and improve survival rates. Dead or unstable ficus trees will be removed, while 79 new trees will be planted. Older ficus trees will be relocated to city parks, with younger ones planted along the avenue to prevent pavement damage and promote sustainability. The project also includes upgrading water supply and drainage systems to manage stormwater more effectively, reducing the risk of flooding and improving sustainability. Public lighting will be modernized, with new street lamps and dedicated lighting for pedestrian and bicycle paths to make the area safer and more welcoming after dark.

However, the community has expressed concerns about the project, citing safety issues, delays, disruptions, and poor communication from officials. There is also significant opposition to replacing the historic ficus trees, valued for their environmental and historical significance, with Chinese pear trees and younger ficus (Refs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 16).
