Historically and until ca 1987, the area was agricultural. However, the city was looking to expand, and the fields had been slowly shrinking due to investments. The visit of John Paul II in 1987 resulted in the utilization of the big area for a meeting point for around 1 million people and the pope. The event inspired the municipality to protect the place and create a large urban park to commemorate the visit and provide the residents with a recreational area [1].
