Short description of the intervention
The Adopt-a-Park project is an urban re-greening and renewal program. The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), working together with the 17 Metro Manila local government units (LGUs), has launched the initiative to address rapid urbanization and urban decay by creating new green areas and renovating existing but underutilized or derelict neighbourhood spaces [4]. The project is part of the "I ♡ Metro Manila" advocacy program of the MMDA, which was launched to "uplift the spirits of the residents recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as to strengthen initiatives on urban renewal that aims to transform the metropolis to be a more livable, greener, and resilient region"[1].

Implementation activities
In total, 23 Adopt-A-Park projects are being planned by the MMDA across Metro Manila. The first park rehabilitated under the project was the MMDA-Valenzuela City Friendship Park in Barangay Bignay, which was inaugurated in February 2022. Since then, several open spaces and pocket parks have been renovated or created, including the Buting Linear Park in Pasig, El Polvorin Linear Park in San Juan, Gatchalian Park in Las Piñas, Hulong Duhat Plaza in Malabon, Urban Green Space and Recreational Park in Muntinlupa City, City Park Phase 3 in Parañaque, and Navotas Greenzone Park-Phase 2. [3]
Implementation activities vary from site to site but include landscaping and enhancing the areas with various function-enhancing features. These included the installation of lighting systems, plant boxes, water fountains, seats and benches, ramps for persons with disabilities (PWDs), exercise areas for adults and senior citizens, playground equipments for children, multi-function spaces for families, comfort rooms and informative signages. [2,5,6] Citizens are also expected to take care of the park and maintain its cleanliness. [2, 7]

Please specify social innovation
The Adopt-A-Park project is an urban re-greening and renewal initiative which had a special focus on encouraging inclusive and participatory planning among stakeholders. [1] The project emphasized the creation of functional green spaces for the benefit of citizens [3]
The MMDA worked together with the LGUs to create the parks, and citizens are expected to contribute to the maintenance of these parks. [1,7] As such, the project is a testament to the significance of the productive collaboration between local government units and national agencies. [2]
Please specify novelty level of the innovation
Besides addressing urban decay and reducing the urban heat effects, the aim of the project was to provide safe and clean areas for family events and wellness activities that can support their physical and mental health amidst the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. [1,7] Thus, the project has a specific focus on improving mental and physical health by creating functional areas for children, adults and the elderly, which can be considered an innovation compared to similar projects elsewhere.
Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
The project development resulted in newly planted grass areas [2], as well as the implementation of plant boxes [7].
The project is expected to lessen urban decay and has resulted in the renovation of derelict, underutilized areas [3] and subsequent site development [3].
The Greenzone Park used to be an abandoned area where residents threw their garbage and the area was used as a chicken den [7].

Economic impacts
Description of economic benefits
Unknown
Description of social and cultural benefits
To renovate the areas, the parks were equipped with bollard lights, seats, ramps for persons with disabilities (PWDs), exercise areas, and a colourful playground for children to enjoy [2], and new outdoor space for residents where they can spend time with themselves or with their families [3].
“Having open parks and spaces in the community would promote a healthy lifestyle among our constituents. Here, the kids can play while the adults can use the open area for wellness activities such as Zumba and exercise." [5]
The 3,500 square meter park in Navotas includes an area where families can bond to eat, talk, and relax [7], thus the project expects to deliver opportunities for social interaction and recreation.
Citizens are also expected to take care of the park and maintain its cleanliness [2, 7], being thus involved in the management of local green space areas.
The open spaces are good for both the physical and mental health of Pasigueños living around the area [8], and the parks offer an opportunity to give children a space to play safely [5].
