Réaménagement Du Square De Chalampé À Neudorf
Short description of the intervention
Preserved from urbanization, the square of Chalampé is a bubble of greenery in the heart of old Neudorf. The square had become aged, under-equipped and surrounded by a thin vegetated strip (Ref. 1). The project aims to revitalize Chalampé Square by removing invasive species, replanting vegetation that will remove the shady character of the square and by recreating the plant lines that line the square (Ref. 2).

Goals of the intervention
This square was aging, not very visible and under-equipped. It originally offered a large sandy space surrounded by a thin vegetated strip, while despite its large trees, it appeared to be very minimal without any real character. As well as re-equipping the space with recreational facilities to improve the site's attraction, and recreating the vegetated strips by re-planting vegetation, the biodiversity of the site was to be improved by installing an insect hotel in the square (Ref. 1).

Implementation activities
During a public consultation on May 14, 2013 hosted by Strasbourg Eurometropole, wide appraisal was made of the proposal to develop the site. The delivery of planned works were made in November 2014 (Ref. 2). The duration of works lasted 4 months, running until February 2015 (Ref. 1). The awarding criteria for the contract listed environmental performance as one of the key aspects of the tender. The areas of the square worked on consisted of the following: Total area of the square = 2,500 m2 Green area = 950 m2 Stabilized area = 550 m2 Surface area for playground = 300 m2 Grass surface = 285 m2 Linear fencing = 110 ml (Ref. 3).

Renovation Of The Chalampé Square In Neudorf's is part of the citywide Strasbourg Eurometropole's Energy Climate Plan that mentions its support for pilot schemes that design a bigger share of environmental factors into public spaces. As a result of these schemes it suggests greenhouse gas emissions have dropped, while biodiversity is greater and the use of soft modes of transport is increasing (Ref. 5)

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
Green space and habitat:
-Increased green space area: Green area = 950 m2 (Ref. 2).
-Increased conservation or restoration of ecosystems (local habitats for local species): "The project aims to revitalize this square whose arrangements, heterogeneous and worn, are to be renewed, just as it is necessary to eliminate some invasive poplars and replant vegetation that will keep the square its shady character, by recreating the plant lines that border this square" (Ref. 2). An insect hotel was also put in place (Ref. 1).
-Prevent or control invasive alien species: " it is necessary to eliminate some invasive poplars" (Ref. 2).
-species present: This intervention provided the means for insect species to inhabit the area (Ref. 1).
emissions: citywide Strasbourg Eurometropole's Energy Climate Plan mentions its support for pilot schemes that design a bigger share of environmental factors into public spaces. As a result of these schemes it suggests greenhouse gas emissions have dropped, while biodiversity is greater and the use of soft modes of transport is increasing (Ref. 5)
-reduced noise:"... bring more calm to residents. Among the nuisances, there is indeed the noise of scooters crossing the square diagonally at night or the squatters who settle there" (Ref. 2).
-pollination: An insect hotel was introduced to the site as a means to positively impact the locale's habitats that support biodiversity in the area. Meanwhile the re-planting of vegetation is supposed to re-develop the site's previously deteriorating state at the same to as reinforcing the role of greenery in recreation public spaces (Ref. 1).

Description of social and cultural benefits
Safety
-Increased perception of safety: "after renovation, the square will have only one and only one entrance, closed at night, with a fence on periphery. It is an improvement in safety for children during the day, which should also bring more calm to residents. Among the nuisances, there is indeed the noise of scooters crossing the square diagonally at night or the squatters who settle there" (Ref. 2).

Social justice and cohesion:
-Improved access to urban green space: Green area = 950 m2 (Ref. 2).
-Increased opportunities for social interaction: " Very frequented by families with their children, this square is a very convivial place" (Ref. 2).

Health and wellbeing:
-Gain in activities for recreation and exercise: Surface area for playground = 300 m2 (Ref. 2). "identify a location for pre-teens' ball games in order to keep them away from the games for the little ones, possibly put a fence in front of the wall that borders the square on the rue de Bâle side to avoid throwing balloons and other objects among residents" (Ref. 2).

sustainable transport increasing: the use of soft modes of transport is increasing (Ref. 5)
