Native title of the NBS intervention
Green City Manegg
Short description of the intervention
The Generalunternehmung Losinger Marazzi AG is developing a sustainable city quarter with Greencity, incorporating alley trees, pocket parks, house gardens, and green areas attached to the buildings (Ref 2). The landscape concept contrasts the new concentration of urban housing, services, and businesses with the landscape’s natural geomorphological features. The place is very close to the Sihl river. The river landscape defines western and eastern Manegg which benefit from other characteristic natural features, forests and the grasslands of the Entlisberger embankment. The newly erected, densely built “GreenCity” dovetails with the natural landscape it’s nested in (Ref 1).

Goals of the intervention
To serve multiple urban purposes; contributing an additional attraction to the city of Zurich and providing a quiet area for the general public, increasing green space within the city, provide some habitats for local species, local air temperature control, local air pollution control, and aesthetics (Ref 1)
Quantitative targets
To construct 30% building area and 70% green area, recycle 100% of the recyclable waste, reduce the energy consumption, waste generation, and air pollution (Ref 3).
Monitoring indicators defined
CO2 captured, total number of people using the area, local temperature reduction (Ref 1)
Climate change mitigation: What were the goals of the NBS?
Implementation activities
The area has been divided into plots for the plantation and building construction. New buildings are being constructed with rainwater harvesting facilities, low energy demand facilities, and with more green areas connected. Trees and shrubs have been planted. A pocket park has been created, a pathway to connect to the river Sihl has been created (Ref 2,3)

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
The newly erected, densely built „GreenCity“ dovetails with the natural landscape it’s nested in. This becomes particularly evident in the open areas and the factory canal promenade that extends into sloping meadows. It is planned to plat hundreds of trees to make the open space green. These are expected to contribute to lowering the local temperature and air quality. They are also expected to attract some bird and insect species. These open greenspace areas serve multiple urban purposes; contributing an additional attraction to the city of Zurich and providing, as city gardens do, quiet areas for the general public. (Ref 2)
Description of economic benefits
The intervention is expected to provide an improved residential place and an attractive business development centre as well (Ref 1, 2).
Description of social and cultural benefits
The residential place would be quiet and would provide the locals to connect more with nature and improve their livability. It will also provide a place for biking and walking and other physical exercises (Ref 2).
Type of reported impacts
Indicators
Nearly 60,000 m2 green space creation with trees and shrubs plantation, number of species provided new habitats, degree of air temperature reduction, amount of local air pollution reduction (Ref 1,2)
