Historical rain gardens at the Great Mosque of Cordoba
The rain gardens of the Great Mosque give an example of a sustainable urban drainage system built 1000 years ago (Ref.1,8,9). The Great Mosque is a world heritage site by UNESCO (Ref. 1); therefore the rain gardens are protected and will continue to provide a sustainable irrigation system needed for the arid climate of Andalusia (Ref. 8,9).
Northern Station Park
Reconstruction is occurring in the Norra Stationsområdet area in the City of Stockholm, creating the city district Hagastaden (Haga City). In Haga City, an elongated hourglass-shaped park will be created called The Northern Station Park (sv. Norra Stationsparken). The park will run through the northern inner city from Torsplan and Hagaplan in the west to Norrtull in the east, and it is one of Stockholm's largest park initiatives. The first part of the new Norra Stationsparken in Hagastaden was to be inaugurated in September 2019 and the rest of the park is expected to be completed in 2024 (Ref. 1, 2, 8, 9).
El Patriarca Park
The El Patriarca Park aims to rehabilitate and restore 60 hectares of land for ecological benefits and recreational purposes for the inhabitants of Cordoba (Ref.1,3,4,6). It takes place on a site with distinct areas, including a holm-oak forest with Mediterranean scrubland of extraordinary environmental value. This NBS is an effort to protect natural values, erase the traces of urbanization attempts of the seventies, and repair damages caused by human action (Ref. 6). Implementation of the project is expected to start in early 2021 (Ref. 6).
Water park treats water at Laduviken
A water park has been constructed for the treatment of the pumped groundwater and stormwater from Roslagsvägen. A sedimentation basin is being built by the Swedish Transport Administration in connection with the construction of the Northern Link. The stormwater is led via an overloaded sedimentation basin, which is also supplied with large amounts of leaking groundwater from the metro. The goal is to reduce the phosphorus supply by about 25%. (Ref. 3,4)
Vertical Garden
A 40 m2 vertical garden installed on one of the clinic's walls in 2012. It was the first vertical garden to be constructed in a hospital in Europe. It aimed to create a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere for visitors and patients at the clinic, improve the air quality and humidity of the complex and beautify the space of the hospital. (Ref 1) Over 1400 plants with over 40 species were included in the vertical garden (Ref 2).
Living wall at the College of Architecture
The ‘Art Natura’ design was a submission to an ‘Ideas Competition’ for the Headquarters of the College of Architects of Córdoba. The design plan aimed to include nature in public spaces, through the use of a vegetal facade with a low irrigation system to transform the enclosure into a skin capable of compensating the differences of temperature and humidity in the different building planes. (Ref. 2)
Pilestredet Park
Pilestredet Park project was one of the largest urban ecology projects in Scandinavia and included redevelopment of a neglected inner-city quarter of Oslo while meeting high standards of sustainable construction. The project included energy efficient buildings with high quality indoor environments, plenty of green areas, as well as an extensive stormwater runoff management system for the whole site. Pilestredet Park also contributed toward the development of more sustainable construction techniques and products, much thanks to the strict requirements from the Environmental follow-up program developed by Statsbygg and Oslo Municipality's (Ref. 1)
Roofscape Sveavägen
Creation of a green roof with ecological biodiversity, a place for informal meetings and recreational purposes. Is part of the Sveavägen 44 project in central Stockholm, where office space is converted into a modern and flexible meeting place with the environment and sustainability in focus. (Ref 1, 2, 3)
