Hanken School of Economics green walls

Hanken School of Economics has placed green walls on its campus in Helsinki. The walls are placed in libraries and group rooms where students spend long periods of time to provide better air quality (ref, 2). The NaturVention (now known as Naava) patented active green walls are claimed to filter air 100 times more effectively than regular indoor plants (ref. 3). With pure and fresh Naava air, it is claimed that people can focus on their day, while Naava takes care of their air (ref. 5).

Tracks Park Corridor

The intervention includes two elements, part of the project aims to create a park and then a green corridor that unites that park with the city. This last corridor project was then planned as a rehabilitation and development project in three phases along an urban transitway. It aims to be recovered as a public space for citizens to improve the urban sustainability of Palma. Aside from the infrastructural development the intervention also included tree planting and green cover maintenance (ref 1). The work on this development began, but it was unfinished.
After public protests (Ref 11 ), in 2019, there was another phase proposed for this project, to retake this unfinished initiative and make a long corridor from the Parc de Ses Estacions to the Son Forteza District. This part of the project was on the planning phase due to the complexity of urban planning change as well as the costs of this initiative. There has been no development of this new proposal (Ref 10).

Bilbao Roof Top Community Garden

The project focused on the creation of a rooftop community garden located near a metro station in Bilbao that aims at educating the residents of the neighborhood on how to grow vegetables, how to eat healthily but also offers free practice hours for every person that wants to have their own plot. The project was initiated by the Bilbao's Center of Innovation, a center that aims to contribute to the economic, strategic and solidarity development of the Municipality of Bilbao (Ref 1).

Municipal Urban Community Gardens of Rekalde

In 2015, Bilbao City Council launched a pilot project of municipal urban gardens in the district of Rekalde. These urban gardens aim to improve the quality of life of residents by promoting a healthy lifestyle within the neighborhood. Additionally, the municipal urban gardens support a broader initiative to create ecological connectivity across the city’s Green Belt, by linking forest parks with urban parks. (Ref 1)

The Ametzola Park

Ametzola is a neighborhood of Bilbao District 7 located on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary. In 2005 the construction of a park began since the neighborhood was seen as being alienated from other quarters of Bilbao and solicited a regeneration and integration into the urban life of the city. (Ref 1)

Community-based actions for urban development

Tallinn implemented a community-based action plan for urban development in the Paljassaare conservation area, aimed at raising cattle on the Paljassaare peninsula, creating community-based beauty and vegetable gardens and restoring a wetland and lakeshores (ref. 3). The Paljassaare area several protected areas required active intervention in the form of care. The management of urban animals had the following objectives implemented: Paljassaare Wetland Complex Restoration; maintenance of a mosaic semi-natural habitat based on conservation values; updating protection regimes and organization; modern visitor arrangement based on protection values ​​and visitor intensiveness (ref. 2).

Bridgefoot Street Park

After years of campaigning by local residents in the Liberties area, local authorities approved the idea of creating a park at Bridgefoot Street, instead of selling the area to developers who would have built a housing project there. The park will include lawns, flowers, trees, furniture, lighting, allotments, a community garden, a terrace, play space and play equipment and more. Bridgefoot St. Park will transform a derelict place and address the lack of green and recreational space in the area which locals had been campaigning against. After years of a long wait, the construction of the park has finally begun in 2020. In the meantime, the citizens took matters into their hands and the site became a community garden for a time with residents growing their own fruits, vegetables and even tending to egg-laying hens. Towards Healthy Adulthood (KOTA)

The reduced green space in cities and the declining level of unstructured physical activity affect especially children as major developments in the immune system occur during the first years of life. Interacting with nature also increases perceived well-being and promotes environmental responsibility. The KOTA-project was funded by Helsinki Metropolitan Region Urban Research Program and the University of Helsinki conducted the study. KOTA examined how greening of kindergarten yards affects children’s health and well-being in the urban environment. Six kindergarten yards were transformed and a control group of non-modified kindergartens was used. The project extended beyond Helsinki, with the transformed sites being not only in Espoo (part of the Helsinki Capital Region). (ref. 1).

Honkasuo urban village

The project aims to turn Honkasuo forest and meadow area into an urban village to house 2000 residents. These delightful nature elements have been preserved, for the most part, and the wave of sustainable development that is sweeping over the area has a definite environmental/ecological symbol as well (ref. 4). The constructions are aimed to be made out of wood and are meant to attract a diversity of people. Part of this project is the creation of a park, urban farming plots, natural design to attract butterflies, a playground and natural ponds to retain rainwater (ref. 2,3,4). Part of the development has been completed with residents start moving in 2016, although the landscaped embankment is expected to be completed in 2022

Rain Box Planters

Excess rainwater in sewers causes flooding and the overflow spills into the rivers. Rainwater spilling across pavements can also make for an unpleasant walking experience in the city. Dublin City Council, in collaboration with residents, ran a trial use of Rain Box Planters as a way of both greening the streets and better managing rainwater coming from roofs. The Rain Box Planters were placed below houses’ gutters in order to slow the torrent of water entering the drain. The first trials were successful and the next stage is to test them on a larger scale. (ref 2, 3)
