Boathouse in Podjuchy by the Regalica river

The initiative aims to ensure open access to the river Regalica for the local community and to create a multifunctional recreational area there. Given current spatial development plans, the chosen location is the only feasible solution to facilitate public access to the river. The project will address multiple NBS domains as its plans include: building new water stand, fishing place, and an observation deck, developing an ecological and educational path along the riverside, developing recreational spaces for the community including outdoor and cultural activities. The project relates to the long-term brand strategy of the city: ‘Szczecin floating garden 2050’[1]. The architectural plan was accepted and put forward for the implementation in 2019; currently, in July 2020, the project is still in the planning phase [4].

Bohnenbach Park

The Bohnenback Park project was one of the first urban redevelopment measures in Bielefeld and was opened its gates for the public in May 2017. The park is the combination of blue and green areas in the Bethel district. It was created by exposing the Bohnenbach stream which previously had been piped and been flowing underground. The park consists of free, bright spaces and lawns with few individual groups of trees. Along the naturally meandering course of the brook, there is a long, north-south oriented promenade, which also forms the backbone of the park. It separates the neighbouring buildings from a parking lot while also connects the Bethel district to its surrounding areas via a green corridor favourable for recreation (1, 7).

Jekteviken Terminal

The waste management company BiR built a new terminal with underground waste collection using suction techniques. In connection with this new establishment, a green wall and a green roof were installed by the landscaping company Wikholm. In 2015, the plant wall at Jekteviken Terminal was the largest green wall in Norway, covering 350m2 with its 17 000 plants. (Ref. 1) In addition to providing aesthetic value, the wall also insulates the building, cleanses the air, and binds dust. (Ref. 6) Irrigation of the wall is automatic, as the wall collects and stores rainwater and use it when needed. (Ref. 1)

Metrodom Panorama vertical forest

Metrodom Panorama is a private investment containing four 17-storey residential buildings. Following the model of Bosco Verticale of Milan, the facades of the buildings will be created as vertical forests. In the balconies of the buildings 3 to 6 meter high trees are planned to be planted. The construction was finished and the buildings were opened for residents in 2020. As the building is still very new, the green elements of the building are not fully grown in their size, but in 3-4 years the buildings of Metrodom Panorama will be covered with especially lush vegetation. (Reference 9)

Nursery Vegetative Roof

The Green Kindergarten aims to build a pre-school educational establishment in responding to the city’s social, cultural and educational, and ecological needs. The building will include a vegetated roof, which will not only fulfil an aesthetic aspect, but also other important ecological and environmental features and functions related to the operation and maintenance of the building. (8, 12)

The Anfield Project

The Anfield Regeneration project was founded in 2013 with the aim to improve the area and its neglected housing stocks. It was set up by the Liverpool council and the Liverpool Foot Club, along with developers Your Housing Group and Keepmoat. The activities include the development of new and refurbished housing, the development of a new public square including commercial and retail premises, a revitalised high street and the expansion of Anfield Stadium (Reference 6) . It also includes the creation of public spaces and selective garden extensions in the area following the demolition of a number of derelict homes (Reference 1).
The partnership has stated that more than 600 new homes have been built, with 600 existing properties refurbished. The project aims to create 1000 new homes and is scheduled to be completed in 2020 (Reference 6, 8).

Rooftop Garden, Nádor 15

The rooftop garden of Nádor 15 was implemented as part of the sustainable campus development strategy of the Central European University. It contains a community garden that is managed by the CEU community, intensive green roofs and green walls as well. The rooftop garden also collects water for it's automatic irrigation system and supports biodiversity with bat shelters, bee hotels and birdhouses. (Reference 1)

Social garden near Trafostacja Sztuki

The project refers to the development of a vacant plot to create a social garden. Activities and plans implemented included: planting greenery, creating flower meadows and flowerbeds, common flowers planting by citizens, common vegetable growing area and a greenhouse, recreational area (hammock, trampolines, field games, sun loungers and sofas for recreation), cultural zone (outdoor cinema, exhibition space), workshop area (for artistic, ecological and sports workshops), canteen area (open-air kitchen, outdoor bar, communal dining space). The garden was open for the public between 2016 and 2018.(1)(4)

Green roof at the Museum of the Human Body

In 2013, architecture firm BIG's design was chosen for a proposed Museum of the Human Body in Montpellier (Ref. 1). The plan was "An ambitious scenographic project resulting from a simple and clear spatial design. The alliance of its architectural, environmental, and functional qualities". "The gentle slopes of its roofs transform into a landscape intertwining vegetable and mineral terraces that provide direct access to pedestrians on the urban sidewalk and the park" (Ref. 2). It would have involved a "park of eight hectares" (Ref. 12, page 4). The project has not yet become a reality (as of August 2, 2020).

Green wall: Eiffel Palace Office Building

The 53 square meters large green wall can be found in an office building in the center of Budapest. (Reference 9) It helps to balance the humidity indoors, cleans the air and provides a comfortable work environment. The project includes rainwater collection for the irrigation of the green wall. (Reference 6) The building itself was the first one in Central-Eastern Europe to gain the double environmental certification of BREEAM Very Good and LEED Gold. (Reference 9) The focus of the NBS are the indoor green walls, but the building itself also features vegetation on multiple terraces and sun collectors. (Reference 10)
