Nagy-Pándzsa project: flood protection

Győr and its surroundings boast many rivers, streams and lakes, and experiences intense flooding almost every year. The main goal of Nagy-Pándzsa project was to reduce the risk of flood and to regenerate the Nature 2000 area (Reference 7). Due to the reconstruction of the water transporting feature and the reconstruction of the flood-gate, the flood protection could improve and the pollution of waters could decrease. Therefore, the conditions of flora and fauna of waters improved and the size of the utilizable area increased (Reference 8).

Open Garden in Brno

Situated in park Spilberk, the garden features a building with a green roof and a garden with various plots. The building is designed to be carbon neutral and reuses rainwater for toilet flushing and for watering the garden plots. The garden is used for horticultural purposes and environmental education, as well as animal and beekeeping. The complex improves the local micro-climate through cooling and humidification and promotes biodiversity. (Ref. 1; Ref. 2; Ref. 5; Ref. 6)

Green roof federal agency for environment

The renewal of the 220 sqm roof terrace of the Ministry of the Environment in 2010 focused on improving the thermal insulation of the building and the remaking of its green roof. The project was planned by the city council’s department for urban nature in collaboration with a landscape architect and implemented by a professional outdoor greening company (Ref. 2). The green roof won the award “green roof of the year 2013” and is also actively promoted as a model for green roofs, frequently shown to international guests of the Ministry. (Ref. 1).

Roof garden Royal Palace

The Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli) is a palace, museum, and historical tourist destination located in central Naples, southern Italy. In 2016, the rooftop gardens of the Palace were part of the project to renew the historical royal palace to reopen the green space on the top of the Palazzo. The external walls of the internal part have been covered by flowers and plants. In addition, new services have been provided, such as bar, restaurants, recreation areas, providing at the same time economic opportunities and new jobs. (Ref.1.)

Regeneration of the Casale Posillipo garden

This is a project of regeneration of an abandoned small garden in the centre of Napoli, with the plantation of plants typical of the Mediterranean area. The new 400 sqm garden was developed by the Servizio Arredo Urbano of the city of Napoli. The regeneration process was persistently asked by the citizens of the surrounding area which were looking for an improvement of the area. In addition, the garden hosts a new playground for kids, and by consequence, it is considered a new spot for recreational activities. (Ref.1.)

Square of Alcântara

The redevelopment of the Alcantara square is part of the program A SQUARE IN EACH NEIGHBOURHOOD, implemented by the Municipality of Lisbon in 2017 onward. Besides the road re-organization, the project includes specific elements. The NBS includes the creation of a public garden, cycling path, playground facilities and introduction of new trees (Ref.1). The residents of the neighbourhood were asked to participate. The participation process aimed at obtaining from the citizens an evaluation on different pertinent questions in the experience of the public space, results showed: space for pedestrians, improve green spaces and urban living (Ref.1).

Leeds Greenhouse

A part refurbishment of a classic 1930’s building, the design of the Leeds Greenhouse embraces the history of the building. Along with rooftop wind turbines, solar panels, ground source heating, there are NBS advantages to the property, including central rain and greywater management facilities that support everyday living and working. It also installs nearby allotments as well as on-site shared gardens to help strengthen both the sense of community and sustainable consumption. (1, 2, 3, 6) The building comprises 172 flats and 15,000 sq ft of office space. (7) Even though the project was completed in 2010, the residents came together in 2018 to add 250 hedge-plants to the complex. (13)

The Green Wall and Roof of the Veolia Recycling Plant

The Leeds RERF (Recycling and Energy Recovery facility) is the flagship development at the heart of Leeds Integrated Waste Strategy over the next 25 years. Amidst the timber frame on the buildings southern face there's a green ‘living’ wall creating a visually stunning feature in stark contrast to the building’s industrial use. The feature connects to a green roof and softens the building’s visual impact and provide vital bio-diversity to the site and surrounding industrial area. (1, 6)

Green roofs in Water Park 'Termy Maltanskie'

The project involves building two green roofs on saunas in Water Park ‘Termy Maltanskie’ in Poznan. The roofs serve multiple purposes including rainwater retention, thermal insulation, habitat for insects, improvement of the air quality by the production of oxygen and absorption of CO2, and aesthetic functions for the visitors to the amenities [1,2,3].

Living Wall at Saltersgate Junior School Doncaster

Saltersgate Junior School has unveiled its new eco-friendly ‘living wall’ - believed to be the first of its type in a UK school. This was part of a larger refurbishment project. The 98-square metre architectural feature will help insulate the building and use surplus rainwater from the roof to water plants. The Scawsby school’s pupils have been involved in the creation. They will also be looking after it and use it as an educational area for studying different types of plants and insects (Ref 1 & 2)
