Short description of the intervention
Opened in 2019, the René-Dumont Park which runs adjacent to a railway is "a centerpiece of the urban composition of the Nouveau Saint-Roch neighborhood" in Montpellier. (Ref. 1 and 2). This north/south 1.2-1.3 ha vegetation corridor represents a major of the city's urban renewal plan and "allows a great articulation among existing habitats, infrastructures and a contemporary neighborhood" (Ref. 2). The large area is considered to be exceptional for dense urban centres (Ref. 2). "The Nouveau Saint-Roch district is an example of a social, generational and functional diversity" (Ref. 2).

"This urban development planning was considered in the early 2000s. There were two consultation sessions, one in 2008 and one in 2010, and finally a public inquiry in 2013." (source: second uploaded document)
Goals of the intervention
- Bringing nature inside the very city center thanks to this urban park (this park is included in the new district "Saint Roch" envisioned for 2020, a future urban renewal operation which will develop around the train station) (Ref. 3)
- Noise reduction from the trains (Ref. 5)
- Provide a urban breathing space for the city (Ref. 5)
-“Work on René Dumont Park is much more advanced. The park, central point of the district, will have a double utility. Its retention basin will protect the sector from flooding while providing a nice water point in wet periods and a stone passage in dry periods” (Ref. 10).
-“The park, a stone's throw from the city center and the train station, will also be a place of relaxation with arrangements that still need to be discussed with neighborhood councils. Philippe Saurel specifying that, " the idea is of course to make an area usable for children " (Ref. 10).
-"the future green lung of the ZAC Nouveau Saint-Roch" (Ref. 10)
-The slopes of the prairie will allow the capture of rainwater (Ref. 2)
Quantitative targets
"The new park René Dumont designed by the agency Michel Desvigne, about 1.2 ha, will take place on the current car parks. It will house 250 trees that will be planted by the city in 2018, a large lawn and a valley lined with Mediterranean species. Its partial opening is scheduled for 2018" (Ref. 3).
-"A large lawn of 6 000 m2 in the immediate vicinity of the town center and the Saint-Roch station is lined with very large trees" (Ref. 2)

National Forum on Urban Projects where this urban development project "ZAC Nouveau Saint Roch" with its main initiating actors participated: http://www.projetsurbains.com/les-projets-du-forum-2016.html

While the park opened in the summer of 2019, work will be ongoing to realize the vision of the park. Many of the trees which were initially planted were reported to have suffered during a heat wave in 2019:

"Several trees, recently planted, in the future René-Dumont park in Montpellier, ZAC Nouveau Saint-Roch, a stone's throw from the “Nouveau Saint-Roch” station common to tram lines 2 and 4, were devastated by the heatwave that s 'is slaughtered over the city on Friday, June 28, 2019 afternoon.

That afternoon, a record temperature of 40.1 ° Celsius was recorded at the weather station at Montpellier Méditerranée airport. In the city center, the temperature would have reached 42.4 ° Celsius in the shade. In full sun, the temperature certainly approached 50 ° Celsius. The City of Montpellier wants to raise awareness by creating a new public garden in the city center, but the trees that will populate it will have a life expectancy two to three times shorter than the same species that grow in the countryside because of the pollution generated by car traffic, construction sites, lack of space for their roots, impermeability of the soil and dog peeing, a situation that will worsen due to global warming" (Ref. 11).
