Jardins Éphémères de la Place Stanislas
Short description of the intervention
An ephemeral garden has been set up in Stanislas Square each year since embellishment and pedestrianization works took place in 2005 (Ref. 2). The Parks and Gardens Department of the City of Nancy works around a topical theme, unveiled at the beginning of the summer: such as travel, history, or technology. The city imagines flowerbeds which cover up the square, with flowers and poetry. It is intended to offer visitors a new perspective on the square (Ref. 2). In 2015, the project's theme was "Connected Garden" combining technology and nature (Ref. 3).

"Do you know that the Ephémère Garden was born in the framework of a long friendship? In 2003, the first edition of this event marks the 30th anniversary of the twinning between Nancy and Kanazawa. The event was very popular with the public. Since then, the Place Stanislas is adorned each year with a vegetable lace around a given theme." (Ref. 3)
Goals of the intervention
"This type of project is a great way to bring people together, create a sense of belonging to their neighborhood or city, and share that with others" (Ref. 2)
"Both economic and ecological, the ephemeral garden also has a social aspect, since its realization mobilizes insertion sites and people in professional retraining." (Ref. 3)
Quantitative targets
For 2015's iteration of the ephemeral garden, "The Parks and Gardens department has created 19 plant pictures on this theme and has gathered 23,000 plants from 270 different varieties, 950m² of grass, 60m² of flowering meadows and a multitude of stories and connections (Ref. 8).

Implementation activities
This event occurs in fall for 1+ month. In 2015 the "Connected Garden" event started on September 26th and ended on November 1st (Ref. 3). Green space is set up in the historic public square each year (Ref. 3). "Each week, visits will be offered to the public and associations. Throughout the garden, interventions by the various partners of the City of Nancy are planned in order to involve the public directly in this creation" (Ref. 3).
"The materials and plants used for the ephemeral garden are the result of the recovery of the previous ephemeral gardens or the vegetable decorations of the "Livre" on the Square. They will be re-used later, either in the flower beds or the parks of the City, or conserved in the municipal greenhouses for future uses or valued in green fertilizers. Decorative materials (wood, sand, metallic elements) will also be re-used for other projects of the Parks and Gardens Department.", "In an aesthetic and sustainable development logic, plants are planted in zinc gutters" (Ref. 3). Workshops on new techniques were also proposed (Ref. 8).
-People are employed each year to set up the ephemeral garden (Ref. 3).
