Leisure Park in Monte Abraão

Work is underway to build an Urban Park at Rua Ramada Curto, in Monte Abraão. The leisure park will be 6,200 m² and includes a children's playground, a space for seniors, the creation of green space for recreation and park protection with a perimeter of bushes and trees. It will be a continuous green zone of recreation and leisure with numerous access points[1]."People will be able to enjoy this place that is an added value to the community and an investment in the quality of life of our citizens"[2]. For improving accessibility parking spaces and paths were created to benefit the residents[1].

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a project finalised in 2016 and “handed over” through a public/private partnership scheme, from the foundation/donor to the Greek state. The site hosts the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera in a 170,000 sq m landscaped park. The SNFCC's objective is to restore Greece's image and become a global role model of environmental sustainability. The project is committed to a range of educational and cultural activities, which have been provided for free. It also claims flood-regulating functions, air quality improvement impacts and shade provision, among others. [1]

Roerplein Pocket Garden

The Roerplein pocket garden was a Neighborhood Green Plan project. The Neighborhood Green Plans were an initiative of Utrecht Municipality to support the bottom-up 'greening' of its neighbourhoods. Citizens could propose a variety of often quite small-scaled plans that enhance the neighbourhood by means of green spaces that promote social cohesion and thereby community identity. At the Roerplein, a public square was transformed into a green square by way of a participatory process, assisted by a social entrepreneur. The project aimed to reduce heat stress, enhance social cohesion and the attractiveness of the neighbourhood, promote biodiversity and support recreation (ref. 1).

Tree Strategy of Malmö

The Tree Strategy is a municipal action plan in progress, aiming to address some of the main sustainability challenges described in the Environmental Program of Malmö City. Its main relations to sustainability challenges include improved health and well-being, decrease differences in those among different social groups and increase biodiversity. The Strategy includes a range of possibilities for evaluating its ecological and social success (ref. 1).

FitzSimons Wood Biodiversity Education Programme

The aim of the FitzSimons Wood Biodiversity Education Programme is to highlight the value of, and to promote the use and care of biodiversity and green space in the local area through learning exercises and activities taking place in FitzSimons Wood park. To support such educational activities in the park, enhancement of the habitat was carried out by developing footpaths, planting native trees and management of invasive species. Also, a detailed handbook for school teachers was produced with guidance on how to lead school activities where students investigate local wildlife. (Ref. 1; Ref. 2)

Bremen buzzes - program for the protection of bees

A city-wide initiative for the protection of bees developed by the BUND Bremen together with a number of local NGOs, local government and the citizens of Bremen. The project involved the planting of trees and wildflowers that will serve as a food for pollinators in different parts of the city as well as the provision of additional nesting places for the bees. It aims to protect the endangered bee species, increase biodiversity and beautify the city with the new plantings (Ref. 2, 3).


The Vegetable Yard

Creation of an additional spot for a vegetable garden, which is a utility of the charitable society for inclusive employment (Gesellschaft für integrative Beschäftigung mbH) in Bremen. With the land provided by the city and with the financial help of Aktion Mensch organization the initiative aimed to establish an additional area for the gardening and horticultural activities that will involve disabled people. The project aims to increase social inclusion of the disadvantaged groups as well as promote urban subsistence and sustainable solutions in food production. The initiative also involves educational activities (Ref. 2, 3).


Krekovic Park green rehabilitation

Rehabilitation of the public green space of the Park Krekovic through employment of people with a risk of social exclusion. The initiative cleaned the green areas of the park, rehabilitated the gardens with planting actions, and maintained the overall infrastructure. (ref 4)

Forest Recovery of Tapada do Mouco

A group of companies, coordinated by Citigroup and framed by the Sintra-Monte da Lua and Naturlink Parks, met to promote the environmental recovery of the Tapada do Mouco by rehabilitating the plant diversity in the area and removing invasive species in 2001.
The action took place when more than a hundred volunteers from the sponsoring companies triggered Tapada's recovery work” “selective cleaning of invasive alien species and afforestation with native trees and shrubs, such as oaks, ash, willows, arbutus, hazelnuts and holm oaks.” (1,2)

Plants in the city

The NBS constitutes the annual planting of new trees, bushes, perennials, vines and flowers across Bialystok. The initiative is designed and implemented by City Hall and aims at improving the image of the urban area, and to provide a pleasant environment for the residents and tourists [1].
