Queluz Green Bridge

The Queluz Green Bridge is a pedestrian link that includes the creation of continuous green space in the natural areas adjacent to the gardens of the National Palace of Queluz, with connections to the Palace Square and Quinta Nova, and the Parque Urbano Felício Laurel. Integration of the landscape by the integration of an acoustic barrier in the slope with vegetal cover, and by the green bridge of connection between the gardens of the Palace of Queluz and Matinha was also scheduled. In 2020 the Municipality of Sintra signed a memorandum for the construction of the Queluz Green Bridge, inserted in the Green and Blue Axis project. The approval of these documents allows the launch of the construction contract for Ponte Verde in the first half of 2020 (5).

The recovery of Boavista Avenue

This NBS deals with the recovery of an avenue (about five thousand five hundred meters in length, it is the longest Portuguese avenue) that connects Porto's City Park with another avenue and the seaside. The NBS is implemented by the municipality of Porto and it indents to create a green corridor between 2 locations: Ribeira de Aldoar and Avenida da Boavista. Previously, work has been done to this NBS, in 2005, but it was not finalized. (1) As of 2019, the Municipality of Porto announced that work will be halted for this NBS (5)

Rehabilitation of the brook of Mata

In 2017, under a bigger project, the municipality of Sintra started the work for the rehabilitation of an area that included beaches and rivers, such as the Mata river. The NBS solves a problem of accumulation of water and sludge that was unsolved, through the recovery and cleaning of Ribeira da Mata (small river/brook), planting trees and promotion of an improvement in water quality and sand on the beach.

Revitalization of ponds: "Come to the water!"

According to City Hall, the project revitalized a neglected green area and cleaned the local ponds to create an outdoor recreational space for the citizens and school children. It aimed to develop a new park infrastructure, plant new and protect the existing greenery, and purify the water to improve the ecosystem and provide healthier habitat for water and land species in a slowly decaying area. The ponds were utilized for recreation for the local community in the past [1,4].

Parkbogen Ost - Green belt project

When the national German railway company shut down parts of the former East station of Leipzig and its tracks in 2012, citizens developed an idea for its secondary use and came up with the concept of the "Parkbogen Ost" which represents a 5-kilometre long circle of bicycle lanes, footpaths and outdoor space surrounding the East of Leipzig. The city of Leipzig recognized its potential to connect the Eastern Leipzig with the city centre and developed the strategy further by issuing a "Masterplan Parkbogen Ost" as the base for a step-wise implementation of the project in 2013 (Ref. 5).

Social and Community Garden Sadoveanu

Located in the backyard of a memorial house, this NBS was created with 2 purposes in mind: to offer a green oasis to the inhabitants of Iasi but also to educate them since the garden itself relies on volunteers primarily who have the opportunity to come and work in the garden, assist in the process of growing food and learn how to lead a healthy life. In a way, this garden is seen as an escape from city life and it combines education with practical skills and community cohesion (1)

Forest Protection Curtain in Iasi

This NBS refers to a curtain protection forest that was planted 6 km out of the city of Iasi in 2015 by the mayor of a commune next to the city. The benefits of this NBS embrace also the city of Iasi as a method to prevent flooding and to avoid strong winds in the area. Afforestation was seen also as a response to the existence of arid soil and abandoned crop fields in the area due to a large population movement of immigration towards Western countries (1)

Recreational area Ciric

The Ciric Entertainment Area is a bordering area of ​​the city, located 6 km away from the city center. Before the Second World War Ciric did not exist on the map, being a hollow valley without a forest. Nowadays, being arranged as a recreational site, Lake Ciric is surrounded by a beautiful forest. The rehabilitation aimed at creating easy access to the area, to include it in the functional green area of the city and to increase the quality of life for Iasi's inhabitants (1, 2).

Melcul Verde Teaching Garden

This NBS was developed in 2015 by the Romanian Association of Permaculture in order to bring nature and its benefits in the middle of the city. The approach was to implement a vegetable garden in a high school in Iasi located in a quarter dominated by building blocks. The implementers had in mind to reconnect children with nature, to present to them the organic process of how food is produced and to teach them basic occupational skills (1)

Malmo Office Tower

The Malmo Office Tower is a building of offices built having in mind the example of the Swedish city of Malmo. The building is the only green building in Craiova and it has as a starting point the development of sustainable infrastructure and the use of alternative energy sources. It contains green balconies and it aims to become an example for other cities throughout Romania, bearing as a goal to transform in reality "the dream of a green city, where our children can breathe without worry" (1) It is located near the major 2 parks of the city.
