Protection of Fossil Beach - Molentargius
The Molentargius-Salt Works Regional Natural Park, spanning approximately 1,600 hectares, is located in South Sardinia between the towns of Cagliari and Quartu Sant'Elena, adjacent to the Poetto seafront. The park features diverse ecosystems, including wetlands and salt flats, and houses the Orto Botanico di Cagliari, which showcases native Mediterranean plants.
In 2016, a project was initiated by a group of stakeholders to preserve and enhance biodiversity within the park. The project's goals are to protect and promote the unique ecosystems, such as the fossil beach, and manage invasive species like the Louisiana crayfish. Through various activities—educational programs, public engagement, and conservation efforts—the initiative aims to raise awareness and deepen understanding of local biodiversity and its historical evolution.
A primary focus of the project is the conservation of the Orto Botanico area in Is Arenas, which contains a fossil beach that offers valuable geological insights into the region's past. Planned activities include cleaning and securing the area, creating educational pathways, and employing multimedia tools to engage visitors. The emphasis is on teaching the public, especially students, about biodiversity as a result of environmental adaptation through practical learning and cultural exchanges.
Another critical aspect of the project is the study and control of the invasive Louisiana crayfish, which threatens the park’s biodiversity by contributing to riverbank erosion and impacting native fauna. The project will incorporate scientific research on the crayfish and develop strategies to limit its spread, aiming to protect the park’s delicate ecosystems from further disruption by invasive species.
Lastly, the project emphasizes cultural exchange and social inclusion and fosters dialogue on the shared ecological challenges in Parco Molentargius. (Refs. 1, 2 & 5)

Green roofs on buses
Green roofs were created on vehicles in the Spanish cities of Barcelona, Girona, Córdoba, Valencia. This initiative is based on the project of Marc Grañén, who developed PhytoKinetic a project for the development of moving gardens. (ref 1) The city of Palma de Mallorca was also considering its introduction as a measure of sustainability. (ref 1) The intervention, however, remained in the pilot stage (ref 1 and 4).
Vias Park (Green Pathways)
The project takes the form of a proposal for greenways of transport in the city to integrate transport infrastructure into the environment and insular landscape. The Park Vias would include communication channels that integrate into the natural environment, taking advantage of the environmental aspects to enhance the attractiveness of the greenways (ref 1). There are three greenways that were proposed, one which was made on an unfinished previous train railway (ref 1) from Manacor to Artà (Ref 6). This greenway was constructed with several social inclusion elements, there is no information about the other four (Ref 1).
Therapy through horticulture
The author of the project (visualized, not completed) designed a recreation area for youth from schools, dormitories and people interested in need of horticultural therapy in one of the school courtyards in Białystok. The project would involve revitalization and modernization of the school’s courtyard to adapt it to the needs of people with disabilities and adequately manage the greenery around. The garden would allow for therapeutic work with plants, art therapy, and activities that support the mental and physical health of the participants [1,3].
In 2015 the project was in envisioned and pitched only, but it did not receive funding from the participatory budget of Białystok.

City Garden
The city garden was a 2000 square meter large communal garden in Nuremberg Eberhardshof district that invites all citizens to take part in gardening and co-operating activities without any costs attached. The project was aimed at promoting sustainability for Nuremberg and the Bavarian region (1). The gardeners try to rely on a variety of different plants, even in their last season, they planted 35 tomatoes, 14 chili, ten potato, and twelve bean varieties alone. In 2013, a bee colony was also established. (7) The project had its last season in 2018, after which it had to be closed because of plans to create a district park in its area. (5) The city garden has established itself as an important leisure facility in Eberhardshof by offering, for example, cooking courses and training courses on tree pruning as well as numerous other topics. Medway Green Grid
The Green Grid aimed to link urban and rural neighborhoods with a network of quality green spaces and corridors of landscape, recreational and ecological value. The aim was to achieve the added benefits by managing open space resources as a set of linkable sites rather than in isolation. It was a planning intervention that was focused on connecting a high quality, functional green space network (Ref 1). The intervention was part of "Greening the Gateway Kent & Medway" (Ref 2).
Vertical Urban Farm De Schilde
‘De Schilde’ in The Hague was the former factory of Philips Telecommunication that had been empty for years. In 2016, it become the home to the largest commercial city facility for food production in Europe: a 1,200 m2 roof greenhouse for specialized vegetables, a 370 m2 covered fish farm and a 250 m2 area for integrated processing and packaging. In addition, 250 m2 within the farm was exclusively reserved for events and guided tours. (5) The farm comprised two-storey greenhouses on the roof and uses the UF system for the sustainable production of fish and vegetables. (5) The urban farm was initiated by the the municipality of the Hague and realised by Urbanfarmers, a Swiss technology company focused on building food production facilities in cities (5).
However, the initiative wasn't successful. In 2018, the company declared bankruptcy and terminated production in the rooftop farm as it did not produced any revenues. (12,13).

The recovery of Boavista Avenue
This NBS deals with the recovery of an avenue (about five thousand five hundred meters in length, it is the longest Portuguese avenue) that connects Porto's City Park with another avenue and the seaside. The NBS is implemented by the municipality of Porto and it indents to create a green corridor between 2 locations: Ribeira de Aldoar and Avenida da Boavista. Previously, work has been done to this NBS, in 2005, but it was not finalized. (1) As of 2019, the Municipality of Porto announced that work will be halted for this NBS (5)
Green wall in Infobox Gdynia
The first external green wall in the public space in Poland was installed on the surface of a 30 square meters wall of the Infobox building in Gdynia [1,2]. The project serves aesthetic purposes and aims to improve air quality. The wall was composed of the plants suitable for the Polish climate conditions [3].
Green Wall for Advertising
From 2009 to 2018, a green wall including 1,700 mediterranean perennials (agapanthus, valerian, fern) fed by a water-saving watering system was in place in a heavily frequented part of Marseille (Ref. 3, slide 4). JC Decaux Advertising offered the 70 m² of space for advertising display around the green wall. The project was abandoned in 2018 when the vegetation was completely removed to allow for advertisements to take up the entire surface of the wall (Ref. 1).
