Chaowan Nursery Garden Base Project
The Chaowan Nursery Garden Base Project (潮玩苗圃基地), located along the Dianchi Greenway in Kunming, was established by the Kunming Gardens Virescence Bureau (昆明市园林绿化局) in 2022 as part of the city's efforts to transform into a "city of parks" (Ref 2, 3). Covering 639 mu (42.6 hectares), the Chaowan Nursery Garden has introduced over 1.4 million plants, including trees, flowers, and grasses, greatly expanding the city's green spaces (Ref 3). It serves as a key resource for the Kunming Greening Service Center (昆明市绿化服务中心), providing seedlings for major greening projects along roads like Guangfu Road, Airport Road, Beijing Road, and the Second Ring Elevated Road (Ref 4).
Innovatively designed, the nursery also functions as a park, offering an "immersive" experience with various themed areas such as rainwater gardens, rural gardens, Chinese gardens, and scenic balconies. These spaces allow visitors to stroll through and enjoy the beauty of various flowers and natural surroundings (Ref 4). The project also collaborates with local universities on seedling research, capacity building, and resource sharing, further enhancing its multifaceted role (Ref 3).

El Chamizal Zone of Ecological Restoration
“El Chamizal is a site of significant sociocultural importance and a key part of the identity of the people of Juarez. It is frequently visited by over 200,000 people seeking a space for recreation and enjoyment.” Located along the Rio Bravo/Grande river, El Chamizal is a park and a riparian area (Ref 2). Despite its popularity, the park has been suffering three decades of irregular management by the Municipal Government of Juárez and is facing issues such as accelerated desertification, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss. (Ref.2)
To counteract some of these challenges, in February 2024, the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) designated El Chamizal Park, spanning 327 hectares, as a Zone of Ecological Restoration (ZER) (Ref 1).
The restoration plan involves dividing the park into four distinct zones, each with specific recovery actions (Ref 1; 2). Zone A, covering 107.3 hectares, is designated as a conservation area where reforestation with native species must commence. Zone B, which spans 47.8 hectares, also requires reforestation with native plants. Zone C, encompassing 12.7 hectares, consists of flooded or floodable plains that must remain in their current state. However, the surrounding ecosystem in this zone needs restoration with native aquatic plants to aid in stormwater purification. Zone D, at 159.8 hectares, contains existing infrastructure—such as buildings, installations, and communications—that must remain unchanged (Ref 3, p. 96). The project proposal is still awaiting implementation.

Renovating a park to increase resilience
Parque Central Hermanos Escobar had been neglected for years, but in 2022, it was fully reopened following a public investment aimed at redesigning some of its features. The renovations provided better amenities, new and improved recreational opportunities, and enhanced the city's resilience to flooding and water stress. Although the park already had a dedicated blue space, the renovations increased permeable surfaces (e.g., parking lots) and boosted its water retention capacity with cisterns, stormwater basins, and an artificial lake designed to function "like a natural one" (Ref 1).
The artificial lake was one of the most anticipated additions with a depth of one meter and being used for recreational purposes. It is supplied with water from the existing treatment plant in the park’s western section, which complies with the National Water Commission (Conagua) standards. The lake features recreational facilities, such as boats and a pier, and serves as a habitat for local wildlife, including ducks, turtles, and several amphibian species that have already begun to naturally populate the area. Overall, the improvements were intended to enhance the park's recreational offerings while strengthening the city's defenses against flood risks and water shortages. The local community will have a space to relax and enjoy various facilities, including an open-air auditorium, scenic viewpoints, an indoor pool, and a baseball field, among many other features.

Joe Louis Greenway
The Joe Louis Greenway is a 27.5-mile recreational pathway designed to create safe, connected, and equitable spaces throughout Detroit. It will link 23 neighborhoods across Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Dearborn, connecting them to each other and to the Detroit riverfront. The greenway will transform a blighted, abandoned rail corridor into a park that runs through the heart of Detroit's communities. (Ref. 2, 3)
This project is guided by a Framework Plan funded by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and shaped by extensive community input. Residents voiced a strong desire for the greenway to provide off-street recreation and increased access to green spaces across Detroit. Additionally, they advocated for the restoration and remediation of former industrial sites, which the Conrail section of the greenway will address. (Ref. 4) The design incorporates stormwater management to mitigate flooding, native meadow plantings to support bird habitats, and tree-lined paths for shade and improved air quality. The Framework Plan ensures the Joe Louis Greenway will transform infrastructure that once divided neighborhoods into one that unites them, reconnects natural systems, drives economic redevelopment, and fosters a resilient social network. (Ref. 13)

A Green Promenade for Cagliari
Cagliari's waterfront is currently characterized by extensive soil sealing, which has rendered the soil impermeable, leading to a loss of biodiversity and contributing to the urban heat island effect. Additionally, the waterfront is disconnected from the city due to heavy traffic. In 2023, the Municipality of Cagliari launched the "Green Promenade for Cagliari’s Seafront" project, aimed at revitalizing the waterfront and reconnecting the city with its coastal heritage. Led by Stefano Boeri Architetti, the project seeks to transform the area into a continuous green space that integrates pedestrian pathways with shaded public areas, functioning as a "green lung" to mitigate urban heat and enhance biodiversity.
The initiative will introduce over 200 new trees and 5,700 square meters of green space, creating a park that beautifies the area, improves air quality, and lowers local temperatures. A key focus of the project is fostering cultural and social inclusion by developing new community hubs that encourage diverse activities and strengthen social cohesion. Additional features include recreational areas, sports fields, and outdoor seating. (Ref. 1, 2,3)
The project also aims to enhance social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and urban connectivity, ultimately transforming the waterfront into a vibrant public space that reflects Cagliari’s identity.

The city-wide project Urban Trees for Berlin was launched in 2012 with an ambitious goal: to plant 10,000 roadside trees within five years. This campaign, a key part of the Berlin Senate's Urban Green Space Strategy, is a collaboration between the Senate Department responsible for the environment and Berlin’s district authorities. Initially set to end in 2017, the campaign was extended through 2026.
The project was created to address the loss of numerous roadside trees that were removed due to age, pests, climate stress, and other factors. Limited funds had been available to replace these trees, resulting in negative impacts on Berlin's urban climate, including higher temperatures and worsened air quality, which affect both residents and visitors. The campaign aims to reverse these impacts by securing funding for new trees, restoring greenery to the city streets, and promoting a lasting positive image of Berlin’s urban trees.
The campaign operates on a co-funding model, where individuals, organizations, and companies donate €500 per tree (individually or collectively), with the Senate covering the remaining costs from the state budget (approximately €2,000 per tree). The planting schedule and locations are organized twice annually, with information shared online to keep the public informed.
In 2022, a new assessment of the project’s progress was conducted, commissioned by the Senate to the Arbo-tec office. Around 1,000 of the 3,500 trees planted as part of the campaign by autumn 2022 were evaluated. The selected locations included plantings from all previous construction phases, spanning 12 Berlin districts, with each district having 80 trees assessed from various phases and construction lots. This comprehensive evaluation is intended to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the Urban Trees for Berlin initiative. (3, 4)

Initiated by the Municipality of Iași, the initiative seeks furthermore to increase the amount of green space per inhabitant in the city and reduce overcrowding in other parks, thereby diversifying options for citizens (1 - 9). Planning for the project began in 2022, and the bidding process for its execution was released in April 2024, which is still awaiting a decision (1, 2. 7).
The implementation is expected to involve interventions in existing green spaces, including the planting of 120 trees, 1,000 bushes, and approximately 2,000 species of flowers and ornamental plants. The project will also feature a monitoring program for tree species, management of existing vegetation to protect healthy trees, and removal of invasive or degraded plants (1, 2, 4, 8). Additionally, it will include benches, facilities for physical exercise, an underground waste collector, and a rainwater drainage system, among other infrastructure improvements (1 to 8).
The project is expected to be financed by the local budget and EU funds, with a total estimated cost exceeding 5,000,000 euros, including taxes (2, 4). It is included in the Integrated Urban Development Strategy 2015-2030 for the city (8, p. 12).
The goals of the project are to modernize the park, improve accessibility for citizens in the surrounding area, minimize management costs for the municipality, ensure a sustainable habitat for flora and fauna with minimal invasive interventions, and harmonize architectural proposals with the landscape (6, 8, p. 32). Other objectives include protecting biodiversity, enhancing the park’s aesthetics and the overall city environment, and reducing CO2 emissions, which will ultimately improve the quality of life for surrounding residents (8, p. 141).

Barranco, the smallest district of Metropolitan Lima, is suffering from serious environmental problems that are affecting its inhabitants. Environmental degradation is a consequence of the increase in large buildings (real estate boom), which reduces green space areas and causes a deficit of vegetation in the district. Additionally, there are high levels of air pollution due to car traffic, which has been accentuated by the lack of green areas in the area, which affects the environmental quality and the population's quality of life (1).
Additionally, the district doesn't have more free public areas where new green areas can be created. Due to these combined pressures, the local government has looked for alternatives, considering private areas, which have a high potential to implement green roofs and vertical gardens, which can contribute to face Climate Change as a mitigation strategy and improve the quality of life (1). The Green Roofs and Green Walls strategy is proposed to build citizen culture, nature appreciation, landscape, and ecosystems (2, 3). The aim is, therefore, to encourage the inhabitants of the district to progressively install green roofs and walls, employing an economic incentive in the taxes paid to maintain public green areas (4).
The programme is oriented to generate environmental benefits such as the reduction of air pollution, acoustic insulation, thermal comfort, and increase of green areas (m2) per inhabitant, and social benefits such as the improvement of the living conditions and health of the inhabitants of the district (1, 3), the promotion of social relations (1), the aesthetic improvement of the city, and the possibility of producing food for self-consumption, as there is support in the implementation of hydroponic systems in the green walls and roofs (1, 3). Its implementation focuses on new, under construction or existing residential, commercial, office or lodging buildings (3).

The MMNP spans an area of 47,340 km², extending from Martinique's coast to the boundary of the French Exclusive Economic Zone. The park's management board, which includes diverse stakeholders, must be consulted for advice on development activities that impact the marine environment. Their goal is to balance competing interests within the region.

Notable efforts include creating or restoring habitats for species such as sea turtles and sea urchins, managing invasive species like sargassum algae, restoring coral reefs, and training resource users such as whale-watching companies and diving clubs. Other initiatives include reducing plastic pollution through clean-ups, supporting sustainable fishing practices (e.g., artisanal coastal fishing), installing eco-friendly moorings, funding Marine Educational Areas (MEAs), and sponsoring cultural events that promote marine conservation (Ref 1; 2; 3).

Recovery plan of the Juan Angola Channel
The Juan Angola River is an urban channel included in the system of rivers and channels of Cartagena, and it connects the Ciénaga de la Virgen wetland and the Bay of Cartagena, facing similar issues as the Cienaga de la Virgen such as illegal occupation of its shores, illegal waste dumping, deforestation of mangroves, and pollution. The recovery plan for the Juan Angola River is led by the EPA Cartagena (Environmental Protection Agency), with the support of other institutions, aiming to restore the Juan Angola’s ecosystem. This includes targeting the mangrove forest, dredging the natural channel, and delineating buffer zones with urban infrastructure to create public recreational spaces. The activities involve relocating people illegalling cupping informal settlements from the river shore, moving an existing bridge (the Benjamín Herrera bridge) which obstructs the current, recovering the low tide and riverbed areas, building pedestrian paths, clean the riverbank, recover mangrove areas and establish programs of education and environmental awareness (ref 1 and 2).
