Short description of the intervention
Community Garden Trompenburg was initiated by one citizen who mobilized his neighbours to create a garden in which organic crops can grow. The garden promotes social cohesion and equity within the neighbourhood because citizens, as well as disadvantaged groups and children, work together on the maintenance of the garden. Furthermore, sustainable food production is promoted and taught to interested parties in the form of workshops. (1,3,7)

One citizen, Auke Bakker, initiated the community garden and mobilized 25 neighbour citizens who volunteered and became part of the garden. The community playground is officially responsible for the garden as they are the land owners of the ground on which the garden is situated, but the garden is completely maintained by citizens, school children using the playground and disadvantaged individuals (1,6,7). The municipality financed the soil investigation and made the soil suitable for growing vegetables. (7)

Farming the City is a research project by the CITIES foundation, which has been running since 2010 in which the impact of urban agriculture and local food initiatives on the environment, economic system and community cohesion is investigated (1)

Description of environmental benefits
- With the creation of the community garden the urban green space in the district increased with more than 100 sqm (9).
Description of economic benefits
- In the community garden food is produced organically. Based on a report, the vegetables produced in the garden cannot cover the full vegetable need of the gardeners only contributes to it. However, gardeners report that vegetable grown in the garden has high quality and good taste. (9)

- The community garden has created social cohesion as it has decreased feelings of social isolation by neighbourhood citizens because contact between citizens has been increased (3) Based on a survey carried out in the garden, all occasionally have a chat with another grower (9)
