Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
Climate change:
-Lowered local temperature: "The Augsburger Garten uses the existing urban open space and thus helps to plant local biodiversity. This stimulates a better microclimate in the district" (Ref. 6).

Environmental quality:
-Improved waste management: "More than 70 families are now planting their beds, composting under professional guidance, discussing possible solutions for a sensible use of the water or planting new saplings for a meadow orchard" (Ref. 6).

Green space and habitat:
-Increased green space area/Increased conservation or restoration of ecosystems (local habitats for local species): "The Augsburger Garten uses the existing urban open space and thus helps to plant local biodiversity. This stimulates a better microclimate in the district. Environmental protection is carried out here “without compulsion, but inevitably” and knowledge about biological cycles is carried into people's everyday lives" (Ref. 6).
-Enhanced support of pollination: Insect hotels and beehives were installed (Ref. 6).
Description of economic benefits
Increase in agricultural production (for profit or not): "Small garden plots are passed on to those interested in the district and beyond for growing vegetables and flowers" (Ref. 6).
Description of social and cultural benefits
Social justice and cohesion:
-Improved social cohesion/Increased visibility and opportunity for marginalized groups or indigenous peoples: "Due to the multicultural social structure of the city, experiences from different cultures mix with cross-generational knowledge" (Ref. 6).
-Fair distribution of social, environmental and economic benefits of the NBS project: "The first intercultural garden in Augsburg is a meeting place and open to anyone interested" (Ref. 6).
-Increased opportunities for social interaction: "Different people can be found in the garden and are working on a project together. The common will to work for the maintenance of a garden speaks for success" (Ref. 6).
-Increased involvement of locals in the management of green spaces: "The association's board consists of six people, three of them with a migration background" (Ref. 1).
-Increased access to healthy/affordable food: "Small garden plots are passed on to those interested in the district and beyond for growing vegetables and flowers" (Ref. 6).
-Improvement of sustainable agriculture practices: "The beds, which are processed by the plot gardeners according to their own ideas, are not limited to a form, cultivation methods or plant types. The only connecting elements are the principle of organic farming and participation in community gardening campaigns" (Ref. 6).

Health and wellbeing:
-Gain in activities for recreation and exercise: "Different people can be found in the garden and are working on a project together. The common will to work for the maintenance of a garden speaks for success" (Ref. 6).

Cultural heritage and sense of place
-Promotion of cultural diversity: 60 families from 16 different nations are actively involved in the project (Ref. 1).
-Improvement in people’s connection to nature: "As a space to experience nature, the garden offers children and young people from the urban neighborhood the opportunity to experience nature directly" (Ref. 6).

Education
-Support education and scientific research/Increased knowledge of locals about local nature: "As a space to experience nature, the garden offers children and young people from the urban neighborhood the opportunity to experience nature directly. The garden offers enough space to let off steam and get to know nature in a playful way. Lectures and workshops, conducted by experts on topics such as fair trade, seed production and exchange, production of natural manure and broths, healthy nutrition, beekeeping and self-sufficiency in the city, form the theoretical basis for this" (Ref. 6).

Additional insights
Ref. 6 indicates in a post dated to July 8, 2020 that: "The dissolution of the Kulturpark West with some of the artists and musicians moving to the gasworks, the relocation of the canteen to the Kö and the demolition of the Reesetheater a few days ago gave reason to suspect that our garden would also fall victim to the re-planning of the Reesepark. It is not so! OUR GARDEN REMAINS - under city management and slightly changed conditions, we will stay in place"
