Riqualificazione di San Girolamo (Bari)
Short description of the intervention
The project relating to the waterfront of San Girolamo di Bari is an important piece of the mosaic that provides a new design for the entire city waterfront, from North to South: Santo Spirito, Palese, (precisely) San Girolamo, the connection between Bread and Tomato and Torre Quetta, temporary uses on the San Giorgio waterfront, up to the redevelopment of the South promenade. The project which is almost completed, regenerated the seaside part of Bari, making the seaside accessible and link the city with the coastal area by creating a multi-functional space where playgrounds, a cycling path and green open spaces were built to enhance the liveability of the area. In this way, what was previously considered just as an economic and working part of the city became a new center of social interaction by creating a new institutional green space. (Ref.1, Ref.6).

Implementation activities
The redevelopment of the San Girolamo waterfront is an impressive work that has affected about 2km of coastline, creating a beach of about 12 meters.
For the offshore works, a partly submerged and partly emerging breakwater was created to protect the coast. The beach nourishment was also created to create the beaches: the two beaches at the ends are sandy, the two power plants are pebbly.
The ground works, nearing completion, concern the improvement of public spaces for citizens and have involved the construction of gardens, squares, walkways, a cycle path, a green belt of Mediterranean scrub, public lighting systems and white sewerage
The project also does not present architectural barriers and provides for the integration of the LVE (Loges Vet Evolution) system in the walkways.
Finally, the construction of a commercial area with premises to be assigned under concession and a square on the sea is planned. (Ref.6)

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
The project aimed at "Make Bari live like a big European city", where everyday places become not only places of work for the population, but also opportunities for recreation, recreational and sporting activities by creating of new green space area.(Ref.2)
For the offshore works, a partly submerged and partly emerging breakwater was created to protect the coast. The beach nourishment was also created to create the beaches: the two beaches at the ends are sandy, the two power plants are pebbly. (Ref.6)
Description of economic benefits
It is mentioned that the revamping of the beaches will allow people to get better jobs in tourism but it will also improve this sector especially considering the history of Italy's south which relies heavily on tourism and agriculture. (R.2, 6)
Description of social and cultural benefits
The NBS will create green spaces for people to interact. As the project provides the integration of the LVE (Loges Vet Evolution) system in the walkways which are pavement especially designed for people with visual impairment, the project focused on improving accessibility as well as the availability of public green space for all.
The NBS helped the city to reconnect with its seaside in a safe and integrated way (Ref.6).
