Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
The Municipality of Lisbon has not published or made public a report that indicated the benefits of the NBS, however it is quite clear that the action increased the green area space in the city of Lisbon, by another 25000 sqm.
Description of economic benefits
Even though the municipality hasn't issued a final report of the NBS it was expected from the action to be part of a bigger plan implemented by the municipality of Lisbon. This plan had in mind at declaring that Lisbon is in the running for a place as a European Green Capital for the 2019 batch and this is in part due to NBS like the one implemented and therefore aiming to attract investments to the city (1). In 2020 Lisbon has been named a green European capital. These prestigious titles were awarded by the EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, at an awards ceremony in Nijmegen, the Netherlands – the current European Green Capital. Apart from the title, Lisbon receives a €350k financial incentive from the European Commission to kick-start its green capital year.
