Short description of the intervention
The initiative involves establishing beehives on the roofs of the Catholic University of Lublin and the Centre for the Meetings of Cultures. It seeks to provide the habitat for the bees in the city, help in pollination, educate the society about the bees and shape more ecologically-friendly attitudes among the students, faculty and visitors. It should also produce honey that can be sold or distributed free of charge, which can serve in a promotional tool of the two institutions. The Centre for the Meetings of Cultures has additionally opened a garden to provide food for the pollinators [1,2,3,4,6]. In 2020, the initiative is still ongoing and expanding. Every year, the university organizes a competition about the life of bees for various age groups [7].

A fact that the local regulations had to be changed to allow for the initiative to take place, as prior to it Lublin's local regulations did not allow for the beehives to be located in the city centre, suggests that there were no policy drivers for the initiative on any scale. On the contrary, the two initiating institutions influenced the local strategy, as in May 2016 the city council changed the "Rules of cleanliness and orderliness" and introduced regulations that allow the keeping of mild bees in the center by the educational institutions.(3)

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
In 2016, 4 beehives were put on the roof of the Catholic University of Lublin with around 100.000 bees in each and 12 beehives were put on the roof of the Centre for the Meetings of Cultures with around 40-50.000 bees in each [1,2].
Currently, in 2020, there are 13 hives for honeybees, a natural log for solitary bees, and a hive for solitary bees on the rooftop of the university. The bees are showing signs of good health and well-being, they produce significant amounts of honey [7].
Description of economic benefits
The honey produced by the bees is sold and utilised for the university research [1]. The first honey harvest took place at the Catholic University of Lublin in 2016 and around 130 kg of honey was collected [5].
Description of social and cultural benefits
The honey produced by the bees is sold and utilised for the university research [1]. Further, since 2017, the university has been organizing the national competition "Closer to bees" targeted at young people in school age. Their activities contribute to the global trend of creating pollinator-friendly spaces. In 2018, the United Nations established May 20 as the World Bee Day; hence the competition takes place every year around that date [7]. Educational workshops and activities were conducted at both institutions in the same year [6].
