Green Gate Offices' Vertical Gardens

The NBS is a building of offices which includes vertical gardens. The building brings a unique "green urban concept" into the local market, reflected in the vertical garden and the courtyard, creating a natural, vast outdoor image and a "harmony with nature" environment on each floor. Linked gardens provide a space that will allow employees working in Green Gate to relax and socialize. (1)

Residential Vertical Gardens

The vertical gardens were installed on a property whose two street-facing facades are almost entirely covered with layered greenery. The building is a mini-lung and an example of sustainability for the city, keeping the principles of a living habitat and a relationship with the outside, assuming a revitalizing urban role. Its walls are completely covered with vegetation, creating a vertical garden, with around 4500 plants. (ref.3, 1)The architect who designed the property was originally commissioned to transform an old building but serious structural problems meant the building had to be demolished, and with the chance to start from scratch, considerations for a more radical design began. (1)

Greening facades

The intervention was supposed to be implemented by the project group "Green Facades" consisting of the urban initiative "SchwarmFarm", the research project Quartier Zukunft and citizen volunteers. Greening facades in the Oststadt district of Karlsruhe with hops (climbing plant) to contribute to the cooling of the urban microclimate was their primary goal. Additionally, the harvested hops were envisioned to be used by local breweries for brewing (Ref. 1) Although the project group dedicated to the project was cancelled, there are plans to continue the project in private. (Ref. 2)
The leaders of the project have cancelled it, but it may still be implemented privately in a different form. (Ref. 2)

Green Façade in Genova

The green wall was built as a pilot project in cooperation between the national government, the University of Genova and the Ecosystemic Research Group with the aim to assess urban air pollution. The wall is being monitored to understand which plant species are the most ideal for carbon sequestration in cities (2 and 3).

Vertical garden on community building

Athens' first vertical garden has been installed temporarily at the entrance to the City of Athens administrative building at 22 Liossion St during the city's first green cultural festival, the Green Design Festival in 2008. Such gardens have a positive impact on the environment as the plants trap carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, absorb harmful atmospheric pollution and reduce air temperature in summer, which assists in cooling the building's interior (Ref 1).

Metrodom Panorama vertical forest

Metrodom Panorama is a private investment containing four 17-storey residential buildings. Following the model of Bosco Verticale of Milan, the facades of the buildings will be created as vertical forests. In the balconies of the buildings 3 to 6 meter high trees are planned to be planted. The construction was finished and the buildings were opened for residents in 2020. As the building is still very new, the green elements of the building are not fully grown in their size, but in 3-4 years the buildings of Metrodom Panorama will be covered with especially lush vegetation. Rooftop Garden, Nádor 15

The rooftop garden of Nádor 15 was implemented as part of the sustainable campus development strategy of the Central European University. It contains a community garden that is managed by the CEU community, intensive green roofs and green walls as well. The rooftop garden also collects water for it's automatic irrigation system and supports biodiversity with bat shelters, bee hotels and birdhouses. (Reference 1)

Green facade for Bielefeld gastronomic pavilion - Green Cube

Developer company Helix plant systems built a facade for the restaurant at the Kasselbrink pavilion located at one of the central squares of Bielefeld. According to the preliminary expectations, the green facade will release 760 kg of oxygen per year and absorb 1070 kg of CO2, having a positive effect on the ecosystem, reduce the building's energy use for heating and cooling while also has aesthetic value by breaking the grey tone of the square (Ref. 1, 7, 8).

Vertical Forest

This NBS is part of the new Porta Nuova area, an extended urban transformation of a neglected area of Milan. It consists of two residential towers of 110 and 76 m height hosting 800 trees and over 20,000 plants from a wide range of shrubs and floral plants distributed according to the sun exposure of the facade. On flat land, each Vertical Forest equals, in amount of trees, an area of 20,000 square meters of forest. In terms of urban densification it is the equivalent of an area of a single family dwelling of nearly 75,000 sq.m (3).
