Al-Nasr Youth Center Seed Planting
In Egypt, knowledge about climate change remains limited, particularly among the younger generation. While all children globally face the challenges of a degrading natural environment and climate change, some are more vulnerable than others. This vulnerability is often influenced by the quality, availability, equity, and sustainability of essential services such as water, sanitation, healthcare, nutrition, and education. In response to these concerns, Egypt has taken steps to empower its youth to engage meaningfully in international efforts to combat climate change.
In 2022, with the support of UNICEF, the United Nations in Egypt, USAID, and the Embassy of Switzerland, Egypt's Ministry of Youth and Sports and Ministry of Environment launched the EGYouth4Climate Caravan. This initiative aims to raise awareness among children and young people about climate issues, encourage climate action, and provide a platform for youth to share their opinions and ideas. The caravan hosts a range of activities, including capacity-building sessions, youth dialogues, competitions, festivals, theatrical performances, bootcamps, and awareness campaigns.
One of the caravan’s stops was at the Nasr Youth Center in Alexandria, where a seed-planting workshop was held as part of the caravan’s reforestation activities. This workshop offered children a hands-on learning experience, teaching them about the importance of trees and providing an opportunity to plant seeds and trees across the center’s grounds. Through such initiatives, the EGYouth4Climate Caravan fosters climate literacy and environmental stewardship among Egypt’s youth, empowering them to take active roles in shaping a sustainable future. Real Dos Living Walls and Green Roofs
Located in the Lima district of San Isidro - the heart of commercial activity in Peru - the Real Dos Tower is a prime office building in the Centro Empresarial Real de San Isidro. It was inaugurated in 2018, and it is distributed over 23 levels (14 floors and 9 basements) and enjoys a landscaped green roof (1162 m2) at the crown of the building and numerous outdoor vertical gardens at full height (2365 m2) on the three main fronts (1, 4). This project was a finalist in the 2018 Mipim Awards, considered the ‘Oscars’ of world architecture, and stood out for its architecture and design, due to its attributes of innovation and sustainability (2).

It is characterised by a glass façade with colourful movable shutters and symbolic Peruvian designs (2, 3, 6). It has green walls on the three main fronts, four daylight fronts and a roof garden (2). The architect, Jean Nouvel, worked together with ARVE Peru on the overall landscape plans for the Real Dos tower (1, 3).
This is part of the façade remodelling project of the Camino Real Towers in the Real Business Centre, led by the real estate company Grupo Centenario (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). This overarching Project has sought to develop 4,475 m2 of vertical gardens and roof gardens, which have a technified irrigation system to generate efficiencies in water use, meeting the plants' water requirements in the different seasons of the year. Their implementation helps to filter CO2 and renew the O2 in the office complex.
The ARVE group describes these actions as conducive to creating thermal barriers and sound insulation, a better environment for rest, work and entertainment and increasing property value (7)

Al-Muntazah 2 Neighborhood Tree Planting
Alexandria is one of the vulnerable cities facing climate change (1). From rising sea levels, pollution, extreme rise and fall in temperature and the urban heat island effect, Alexandria is battling significant challenges (1). The city is also worldly renowned for it beaches and gardens that act as the lungs through which the city breathes, and are considered a haven for its people (1). Unfortunately, in the last ten years, there has been a decrease in parks and green areas, which is a cause for concern (1). This shrinkage comes at the expense of urban expansion and the establishment of Commercial and profitable projects, which is a challenge facing the environmental balance and cultural heritage of the city (1). To address the nature of the challenges and climate changes and their effects in Egypt, the president launched the "The 100 Million Trees Initiative" was brought into action in 2022 as part of the Egypt 2030 Vision (2-3). The campaign is meant to double the per capita share of green spaces across the country, improve air quality and people’s health, and reduce greenhouse gases. It will also aim to recoup economic benefits from the trees, including wood and olive oil (3). As part of this initiative, the governor of Alexandria was tasked with taking care of the green spaces and improving the aesthetic and civilizational level, within the scope of Alexandria's neighborhoods and centers (4). In 2023, the gardens department carried out the planting of 812 trees and shrubs of various types within the scope of Al-Muntazah 2 Neighborhood during Week 25 to continue the work of the presidential initiative to plant 100 million trees in the governorate's neighborhoods (4).
The Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge
The Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge is a natural oasis in the heart of Lima. It is considered a marsh of international Ramsar importance, as it is home to a large number of species of flora and fauna. It includes 5 bodies of water with about 210 species of birds, 13 species of fish, and 5 species of amphibians and reptiles, among others (1). It was created in 2006, by Supreme Decree N°055-2006-AG, which established the definitive category for the Pantanos de Villa, under the name of The Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge (2). This protected area was established over an area of 263.27 ha, and its main goal is to conserve a representative sample of the Marshes of the Subtropical Pacific Desert, including important plant communities, as well as migratory and resident avifauna, focusing mainly on species with some degree of threat (1, 2, 6).
In 2016, a Master Plan was approved aimed at strengthening the conservation of the biological diversity of this coastal marsh and ensuring conditions to promote inter-institutional cooperation and participatory management, including neighbours, authorities, municipalities and interested institutions (2).
This Master Plan establishes environmental, economic and cultural indicators defined to be met over 5 years. These are focused on protecting water resources, conserving migratory and resident bird species, ensuring the conservation of the cattail, promoting tourism and recreational activities, fostering environmental awareness activities and engaging citizens in the management of the Refuge (2)

Native Health Traditional Garden
In Phoenix, access to native, traditional foods prepared by Indigenous communities is scarce. This disconnection is rooted in the legacy of colonization and the forced assimilation of Indigenous peoples through practices such as mandatory residential schools. The Phoenix Indian School, which operated until 1990, is a stark reminder of these injustices, and deep-rooted systemic inequalities continue to persist today. In response, Indigenous food activists have worked tirelessly to promote traditional foodways and advocate for food sovereignty.
One such initiative is led by Native Health, an urban Indian health program that provides primary medical, dental, behavioral health, WIC, and wellness services in Phoenix. In 2019, Native Health launched a community-based garden initiative to reconnect urban Indigenous communities with their traditional life ways. The Native Health Traditional Garden was initially established on a 15-acre plot of vacant land, which sat atop the remnants of a notorious boarding school. However, when an investment firm purchased the land, the garden was displaced and forced to relocate. It downsized to less than an acre of space within a larger community garden project known as the "KeepPhoenixBeautiful Garden."
Despite these challenges, the Traditional Garden continues to thrive, drawing from Indigenous agricultural techniques such as Akimel O’odham canal irrigation, Zuni waffle beds, and Diné dry farming. The garden focuses on cultivating traditional, Indigenous, and desert-adapted plants, including corn, beans, squash, gourds, peppers, sunflowers, melons, and medicinal plants. In addition to growing these vital crops, the garden provides interactive learning opportunities for all ages, including workshops, youth clubs, pick-your-own events, and monthly community workdays.

Choquehuanca Square
Lima is the capital of the region with the lowest coverage of green spaces. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a city should have at least 9m2 of green space per inhabitant. Lima is just over 3m2 square metres, which means a deficit of almost 60 million square metres. In this context, actions from the public and private sectors are essential to add this type of space to the city. In response to this need, Grupo Centenario carried out a green project on one of its plots of land in San Isidro, where real estate projects will be developed (1, 2, 3, 4).
A square was built with a green area with wild and low-consumption species, knocking down the walls that surrounded the land for years, turning it into a place for everyone to see and use (1, 2, 3, 4). The Choquehuanca Square was built to contribute to the community and make it a better place to live. It is located on a plot of land that was previously enclosed by walls, converting it into an area of 3,945 m2 with a green space that occupies 70% of the square (1, 2, 3). This is a temporary project, as the green space was opened while projects are being developed on this land (1, 2, 3).

Cultural Park Ventanilla
This mega-project is part of the Agenda for the Commemoration of the Bicentenary of the Independence of Peru (3). It is the new ecological lung of Ventanilla where families have free access to a meeting point where they can carry out sports, recreational, leisure and cultural activities (1, 2, 3). This park is the largest emblematic work carried out in Callao and one of the largest in extension at the national level, built in commemoration of the 200 years of independence (1, 2, 3). It was built on vacant land, where there was no possibility of meeting or recreation for the neighbours (1).
In addition to offering recreational spaces, it is a cultural work that seeks to teach the population about the history of independence, making the public space a commitment to a citizen-centred public policy with an intercultural approach (3). In addition, its financing was part of the second phase of the economic reactivation plan for public investment, encouraging local economic development and generating more than 1,300 direct and indirect jobs (3). This work is an investment of the Executive together with the Regional Government of Callao and the labour force of the municipality of Ventanilla (1, 2). Its facilities are freely accessible and will contribute to the social development and well-being of the citizens (3).

Grant Park Neighborhood Tree Planting
Phoenix is America’s fifth largest and hottest city, a sprawling urban heat island which has expanded without adequate consideration to climate and environmental factors like water scarcity and extreme heat (1). Multiple heat records were broken in 2023 including 133 days over 100F (37.7C), and 55 days topping 110F (43C) (1). Only around 9% of Phoenix is protected by tree canopies, yet this citywide figure masks vast inequities between wealthy, majority-white neighborhoods (1). As a response, the City of Phoenix has adopted an equity-driven heat mitigation plan to create a shadier, more livable environment amid rising temperatures and hundreds of heat-related deaths (1). Part of this plan created the Community Canopy Grant program, which offers public schools, churches and homes in qualifying census tracts – low-income neighborhoods with little shade funds for tree planting projects (1). One neighborhood, Grant Park is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods – and one of the most neglected (1). It is a red lined neighborhood with higher pollution levels, less vegetation, more noise pollution and higher temperatures (1). To change the inequity and create enough shade to provide residents and passersby reprieve from the heat, the city planted around 40 trees in the Grant Park neighborhood within household yards (1-2). Residents can choose from a list of 19 native and desert-adapted trees including the Texas olive, Chinese red pistache and Chilean mesquites (1). The trees, which are a couple of years old and pretty heavy, are planted by contracted arborists (1). Following the planting process, each household was provided with a tree kit – a hose, irrigation timer and instrument to measure the soil pH and moisture, as well as written care instructions (1). This is the fourth tree planting effort by this city and the hope with this initiative is that it lasts (1).
Community gardens "Molihuertos"
In response to rising food prices and knowing that much of the country's agriculture depends on imported chemical fertilisers, the Municipality of La Molina has developed the Molihuertos programme to provide the residents of the district of La Molina with organic crops for their own consumption and to improve their food security (1, 3). As part of the programme, the municipality implemented municipal plots in different parks in the district. Eleven plots were installed in O'Higgins Park, where residents actively participate in the planting and subsequent harvesting of vegetables, aromatic and medicinal plants, which they consume by themselves (2, 3). Through the programme, the municipality trains and provides different varieties of vegetables and aromatic herbs to more than 800 currently enrolled residents (2). These gardens are managed under organic agriculture, which would help to mitigate a possible overpricing and/or shortage of vegetables in Lima, as they do not depend on chemical fertilisers such as urea, but on organic fertilisers such as compost and manure (3). In addition, residents can sign up to receive drawers with planted vegetables so that they can plant and harvest them at home, either for self-sufficiency or to sell if they wish to do so in the itinerant markets organised by the municipality (9).
