Detroit RiverWalk Project
The Detroit RiverWalk is an urban development project along the Detroit River, designed to reconnect residents with their waterfront and revitalize a historically industrial area. Once characterized by abandoned buildings and industrial debris, the riverfront between the MacArthur and Ambassador Bridges had long been inaccessible to the public. To address this, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy was established in 2003 to lead the redevelopment of this space.
The RiverWalk currently stretches along a 3.5-mile section, with plans to expand to 5.5 miles, integrating ecological restoration, public access, and recreational opportunities. The esplanade features native landscaping, artistic elements, and amenities, including four pavilions, a custom carousel, and areas for fishing, walking, biking, and inline skating.
Environmental remediation has been a crucial part of the project. In collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy successfully cleaned up 13,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment, significantly reducing pollution and contributing to the removal of the Detroit River from the list of the most polluted sites in the Great Lakes. Furthermore, the project also includes greenways, park creation and revitalization.

Gårda pilot rain garden
The Gårda pilot rain garden has been constructed as part of the research project Innovative Rain Gardens at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. In addition to causing flooding, runoff rain water in urban environments can be contaminated with microplastics, organic pollutants and metals which can spread into the natural environment. Yet, most of the storm water in urban environments is not treated. The purpose of the Innovative Rain Gardens project is to research the ability of a pilot rain garden to treat such pollution. The project acknowledges the function of a rain garden to prevent flooding, but in this study only the pollution treatment potential is investigated. The pilot rain garden was constructed next to the E6 highway in central Gothenburg [Ref. 1-4]. It includes several different bioretention filters where selected plants are grown in filters containing different materials such as biochar, ash and soil [Ref. 2, 3]. Results so far show that the use of rain gardens can significantly reduce pollution. However, further research is needed to determine the long term function of the bioretention filters and the potential of scaling up the NBS. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (Formas), IMMERSE - Implementing Measures for Sustainable Estuaries, an Interreg project supported by the North Sea Programme of the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union, and COWIfonden (private foundation) [Ref. 1-3].
River corridor restoration: Love Your River Stour
Sourced from Northern Worcestershire, the River Stour has played a significant role in the industrial heritage of Birmingham and the Black Country (Ref 1). It consists of 11 Water Framework Directive water bodies and multiple tributaries, spanning 200 km in length (Ref 2, 3). Once a pristine Salmonid river that powered the Industrial Revolution, rapid industrialization severely impacted the river, leaving it heavily polluted with sewage (ibid.).
Initiated by the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust (BBCWT) in 2021, the Love Your River Stour (LYRS) project focuses on Dudley and Wolverhampton, aiming to transform the River Stour and its surrounding green spaces into a beautiful, wildlife-rich source of pride for local communities and to create a corridor for wildlife to thrive through the heart of the Black Country (Ref 4).
Phase 1 of the project was completed in June 2023, bringing significant improvements along the river (Ref 5, 6, 7, 8). In Phase 2, the project will extend to a stretch running through Cradley Heath and Lye (Ref 7, 8). This initiative is funded by the UK Government's Green Recovery Challenge Fund.

Green Roofs and Green Vertical Gardens in the district of Barranco
Barranco, the smallest district of Metropolitan Lima, is suffering from serious environmental problems that are affecting its inhabitants. Environmental degradation is a consequence of the increase in large buildings (real estate boom), which reduces green space areas and causes a deficit of vegetation in the district. Additionally, there are high levels of air pollution due to car traffic, which has been accentuated by the lack of green areas in the area, which affects the environmental quality and the population's quality of life (1).
Additionally, the district doesn't have more free public areas where new green areas can be created. Due to these combined pressures, the local government has looked for alternatives, considering private areas, which have a high potential to implement green roofs and vertical gardens, which can contribute to face Climate Change as a mitigation strategy and improve the quality of life (1). The Green Roofs and Green Walls strategy is proposed to build citizen culture, nature appreciation, landscape, and ecosystems (2, 3). The aim is, therefore, to encourage the inhabitants of the district to progressively install green roofs and walls, employing an economic incentive in the taxes paid to maintain public green areas (4).
The programme is oriented to generate environmental benefits such as the reduction of air pollution, acoustic insulation, thermal comfort, and increase of green areas (m2) per inhabitant, and social benefits such as the improvement of the living conditions and health of the inhabitants of the district (1, 3), the promotion of social relations (1), the aesthetic improvement of the city, and the possibility of producing food for self-consumption, as there is support in the implementation of hydroponic systems in the green walls and roofs (1, 3). Its implementation focuses on new, under construction or existing residential, commercial, office or lodging buildings (3).

These areas are home to important species like sea turtles, dolphins, and tropical fish. The park’s conservation efforts focus on addressing threats from human activities such as pollution and overfishing. It also collaborates with ocean-related industries, such as tourism and fishing, by recommending, funding, or conducting research aimed at promoting more sustainable practices within the MMNP.
To support its work, the park operates a growing fleet of boats that raise public awareness, resolve conflicts, and enforce the protection of designated areas. The MMNP spans an area of 47,340 km², extending from Martinique's coast to the boundary of the French Exclusive Economic Zone. The park's management board, which includes diverse stakeholders, must be consulted for advice on development activities that impact the marine environment. Their goal is to balance competing interests within the region.
The park receives funding from the French Office for Biodiversity (OBF) to carry out initiatives that protect the marine environment, promote sustainability, and raise public awareness. Notable efforts include creating or restoring habitats for species such as sea turtles and sea urchins, managing invasive species like sargassum algae, restoring coral reefs, and training resource users such as whale-watching companies and diving clubs. Other initiatives include reducing plastic pollution through clean-ups, supporting sustainable fishing practices (e.g., artisanal coastal fishing), installing eco-friendly moorings, funding Marine Educational Areas (MEAs), and sponsoring cultural events that promote marine conservation (Ref 1; 2; 3).

Dudley's Path to Nature Recovery
Dudley, a historic market town in England and part of Birmingham's metro area, is reported to have some of the lowest rates of public access to nature in the country, ranking in the bottom 10% of governmental statistics for available greenspace relative to population density (Ref 1). To address this issue, the Dudley's Path to Nature Recovery project was launched in 2024 by the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust (BBCWT). The initiative aims to reduce inequalities in access to nature and create a greener future for local residents (ibid.).
Funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority, the project seeks to reconnect local communities with nature through five key activities: conservation work, community engagement, citizen science, partnership development, and the creation of new walking routes (Ref 1, 2, 3).
Among the project's activities, conservation efforts will include community engagement and focus on woodland improvement, heathland creation, and more. Additionally, the project will bring together key partners and community groups to explore collaboration models and identify potential sites for joint projects. Lastly, new walking routes will be created across the project’s landscape (Ref 1).

Neighborhood remodelling for improved safety for women
The pilot project in Bairro Padre Cruz, Carnide, Lisbon, is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing women's safety in public spaces and improving access to public transport. Launched in June 2024, this project stems from extensive consultations with local women to address their specific security concerns (Ref1). It involves strategic interventions like better lighting and the relocation of bus stops to safer areas, ensuring a more secure environment for women (Ref4). A key element of the project is the greening of the area through tree planting and the creation of more harmonised public spaces, contributing to a more pleasant and welcoming neighbourhood (Ref2). Funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), this initiative aims to foster greater inclusivity and safety in urban design, with completion expected by 2025 (Ref4).
Taylor Park Community Garden
The Taylor Park Community Garden is part of the After School Tutorial Program and is managed by the Methodist Inner City Mission. Located in the Maysville and Oakdale areas of Mobile, Alabama, the garden primarily serves children from these communities. After receiving homework assistance, students from elementary and middle schools participate in the Gardening Program, where volunteers teach various gardening concepts and engage the children in hands-on activities.
Taylor Park Community Garden is part of a network of community gardeners and urban farmers across the city called Mobile Urban Growers, which aims to increase access to fresh produce for everyone to contribute to tackling the high rate of diabetes (Mobile has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the United States) and food desert in Mobile (over 25% of Mobilians live in a food desert as defined by the USDA without access to fresh fruits or vegetables) (Ref 2). Taylor Park became part of the Mobile Urban Growers (MUG) after it began its operations around 2016 (Ref 2). The garden is open to the entire community, with Mobile Urban Growers and Mobile County Master Gardeners (a volunteer recruitment program) providing support and guidance.
The produce harvested is shared among gardeners, participating children, local residents, and the Food Pantry at Central Presbyterian Church. (Ref 1)

Renovation of the Eucalyptus Garden
The "Jardim do Eucaliptal" (Eucalyptus Garden) in Benfica is undergoing extensive renovations to improve its facilities and usability. Over time, the intensive urbanization of this neighbourhood has not left many traces of the historic eucalyptus forest typical of this area, but this urban park actively protects and maintains these old and heavy-trunk eucalyptus trees, growing amidst the park's more recent vegetation (Ref. 3). In the last few years, several trees have fallen, causing considerable damages to buildings and vehicles in the nearby area (July 2023), and leading to residents demanding financial compensations for damages and for the Lisbon City Council (CML) to take action for mitigating future problems (Ref. 5).
The renovation project implementation, expected to last six months, includes refurbishing the children's playground, sports field, toilets, and amphitheatre, along with introducing a dog park and outdoor exercise equipment (Ref 1). The park, originally part of the Quinta das Palmeiras de Guerreiro Galla forest, remains a crucial green space in the area despite extensive urbanization (Ref 2). These renovations, with a budget of 180,000 euros, also address the maintenance of public street furniture, the pavement, and lighting infrastructure, ensuring that the park meets the growing needs of the local community (Ref 3). These activities aim to meet the growing needs of the local population and improve these urban green spaces so that the community can enjoy them to the fullest. (Ref. 4).

The Cinturón Verde de Independencia initiative is a pilot intervention that seeks to plant an urban forest in the lower middle-class district of Independencia (1) in the northern part of the urban territory (3). Here, 19% of the population lives in high-risk conditions, settled on steep slopes, and threatened by landslides (3).
It is part of a broader planning strategy that involves proposals engaging different levels of government (4). This project seeks to afforest the district's hillsides to improve the environment, reduce air pollution, improve the quality of life of its inhabitants, manage waste, regulate shade, control erosion, increase wild biodiversity, and provide spaces for environmental education (2). The Independence Green Belt is linked to a wide range of plans, projects, and decrees that have been developed by actors at different levels of government since 2016 (4). It works hand in hand with the EBA Lomas programme and seeks to create a green belt along the Lomas-city interface, which acts as a buffer zone for this sensitive ecosystem and creates a protective boundary against the expansion of irregular human settlements while providing a space for environmental awareness (2).

In two phases, an urban forest park of 4,800 of native trees irrigated with treated wastewater has been planted. During the first phase, PREDES planted 3,300 trees with USAID support in 2015, and another 1,500 were recently planted by PERIFERIA (consultants) (3).
