Siargao It Up: Mangrove Conservation
"Siargao It Up" is the mangrove conservation programme in Del Carmen, Siargao Islands of the Philippines. The municipality of Del Carmen hosts the largest mangrove forest in the Philippines – consisting of 4,871 hectares as of 2018. This mangrove forest is the habitat of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna both in marine, wetland and terrestrial areas. This ecosystem helps maintain the island's ecological balance by providing rich breeding grounds for aquatic lives. Furthermore, the forest plays a key role in capturing and storing carbon and helps the Philippines to meet its goal of carbon emission reduction. In addition to creating habitats and storing carbon, the forest also protects the community from the inevitable effects of climate change disasters. Recently, in December 2021, it was able to protect the residents from the onslaught of Typhoon Odette. [1, 2, 3]
Green Roof Favela
The project focuses on encouraging residents of Rio de Janerio's Arará favela to install green roofs on their homes, primarily to reduce the urban heat island effect but also to harness the broader social, environmental, and economic benefits which green roofs can provide, "...from providing thermal protection and improving air quality to mitigating stormwater runoff pollution and saving costs for both residents and cities" (Refs. 2 & 3). The individual behind the project, Luis Cassiano Silva, further hopes that introduction of green roofs into the favela which help to improve residents’ quality of life and "describes the emotional benefits of incorporating green space into the favela landscape" (Ref. 2).
Delhi Biodiversity Parks
Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has established a network of Biodiversity Parks in Delhi with unique landscapes that harbour a diversity of plants, animals and microbes living in ecologically sustainable biotic communities and rendering multiple ecological services. Presently there are seven Biodiversity Parks developed by DDA located across the landforms of Delhi. These parks have a mosaic of habitats with rich floristic and faunistic diversity that function as a dynamic ecosystem. They have ecosystem processes such as organic matter decomposition, regeneration of plants, pollination, resting and nesting of birds and colonisation by other animals. The biodiversity parks in Delhi have proved to provide extreme essential services by creating ecological corridors and maintaining the genetic diversity in an urban setup. Furthermore, these parks have shown substantial potential in storing carbon and other pollutants and help in mitigating climate change. [2, 3]
Dodoma’s Foodway
Rising temperatures, longer dry spells, more intense heavy rainfall and sea-level rise, make Tanzania the 26th most vulnerable country to climate risks. Dodoma, the country's capital, is a city with a rapid rate of urbanisation and uneven population growth. The near-central business district, peri-urban and urban parts of the city, have grown very fast as a result of intensified urban planning and surveying of land. A way of addressing these stringent issues was developed by ICLEI, an international NGO, which focused on the relationship between nature and urban planning and initiated an intervention in the form of a community farm in Dodoma.
This project aims to develop, 15 km from Dodoma's city centre, a community farm that will focus on producing enough food for the inhabitants of the city and its surroundings. The farm is the first in a project that will try to establish foodways. Foodways include customs of food production, preservation, preparation, presentation, gathering, marketing (both buying and selling), uses of food products other than for eating and food folklore.”The project dates back to the beginning of 2020, and it is still ongoing. Lilongwe's Ecological Corridor
The main rivers that cross Lilongwe are the Lilongwe, Lingadzi, Nankhaka and Chankhandwe Rivers, of which the Lilongwe River is the biggest and longest river and the primary source of water for Lilongwe city's residents. At 200 km long, besides its primary function, the river also supports several informal settlements and provides ecological, recreational, cultural and economic benefits. Despite these important functions that the river offers, it is still facing threats such as pollution, urban agriculture, sand mining, climate change effects, and a loss in the biodiversity of fauna and flora that this watercourse hosts. As it sustains a population of approx. 1 mil. inhabitants, the local authorities were interested in finding solutions to address the above threats. As early as 2016, ICLEI ( Local Governments for Sustainability), an international NGO that promotes sustainable development, worked alongside Lilongwe City Council and other stakeholders to protect the river as well as the people depending on it and implemented several actions, with the help of the local community. Eventually, this collaboration led to the issuing of a strategic plan for a sustainable and functional ecological corridor system in the heart of Lilongwe City. The Ecological Corridor aims to transform Lilongwe into a green, clean, prosperous, and resilient city, by ensuring the protection of its urban natural assets, and advancing complementary nature-based solutions. 1,2,3)
Staten Island's Bluebelt Programme
The Bluebelt programme in Staten Island was implemented as it "preserves natural drainage corridors including streams, ponds, and wetlands, and enhances them to perform their functions of conveying, storing, and filtering runoff precipitation or stormwater". (Ref. 2). By delivering "stormwater to engineered systems that are designed to mimic natural streams and ponds which...meander or wind back and forth, the water slows down naturally" (Ref. 1). These actions are intended to "help control flooding, pollution and erosion" (Ref. 2), whilst also providing open green areas for both local communities and a "diverse habitat for wildlife" (Ref. 2). Beginning in 1990, the Bluebelt programme has undergone continual expansion, recognising that "as New York City prepares for rising sea levels and heavier rains due to climate change, Bluebelts offer a natural and effective solution for stable and sound stormwater management" (Refs. 2 & 4). The Bluebelt now includes approximately 400 acres of freshwater wetland and riparian stream habitat and 11 miles of stream corridor (Ref. 4).
Reviving Nouakchott’s Coastal Dunes
Mauritania is one of the Sahelian countries most severely affected by the periods of drought occurring since 1968. The resulting desertification is exacerbated by human activities, which have compounded climatic factors, with direct consequences for an already precarious situation. Environmental degradation, responsible for the dangerous displacement of sand dunes in Mauritania, has wiped out homes, livestock and livelihoods throughout the desert country. In Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital and biggest city, the coast are protected by a fragile wall of dunes at risk from natural erosion, sand mining, grazing of livestock on dune vegetation, and careless abuse of the landscape for leisure like dune racing. In this scenario, protecting the dunes is a priority, and the government is using World Bank financing to overcome the challenge. From a climate change perspective, the intervention addresses accelerating erosion that allows seawater to wash into the city, assaulting buildings, roads, fresh water supply and public space. From a biodiversity perspective, the intervention aims at sustaining the balance between the food for the livelihoods of the local population and the preservation of the rich coastal biodiversity. Green Lungs of the City
The municipal government of the Yiwu city in China has launched the Green Lungs of the City Project (GLCP) in 2019. The overarching goal was to build a green lung, which will create more green spaces for residents in Yiwu, mitigate environmental pressures and improve the city's resilience to climate change. Under the project, a green corridor was created to reconnect the roads, rivers, ponds and lakes where different tree species were planted. Additionally, wetlands were constructed and restored to improve resilience against climate change disasters. The project is still in the ongoing phase, and a forest-wetland ecological park is under development in the city's central area. The GLCP aims to use different types of NBS elements to promote sustainable urban development and to provide multiple ecosystem services to the citizens in a highly urbanised area. [1]
Eden in Iraq: The Wastewater Garden Project
The marshes in southern Iraq, formed by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, are home to one of humanity’s oldest cultures, once the third-largest wetlands in the world. The Eden In Iraq wastewater garden project started as a humanitarian project that has developed as a necessity for the people of Al Chibaish and the localities surrounding the town. This water remediation project holistically looks at wastewater, trying to include this type of water and its nutrients in a sustainable form by using it to create green spaces. The Eden project in Iraq regards human waste as a valuable source of nutrients and freshwater, which can add to local greenery and landscape beauty if properly treated close to its source. From a climate change point of view, the project focuses on the creation of a wetland with wastewater that can support a garden within the marshes of Iraq. Marsh restoration is a powerful tool against warming temperatures and loss of vegetation, especially in arid areas such as Iraq. From a biodiversity point of view, the project bares a great deal of significance as marshes support a myriad of rare wildlife and rich biodiversity. (1,2,3)
The RiverLess Project
Beirut RiverLESS, a project initiated by OtherDada, aims to address the deterioration of the Beirut River and its negative impact on the surrounding communities and environment by developing a holistic response plan for the Beirut River Watershed. The river runs east to west, then curves north, separating the city of Beirut from its eastern suburbs, primarily Bourj Hammoud and Sin el Fil. The goal is to bring the Beirut River back to life by following a Landscape Ecology approach and by enabling local governance, leading to innovative ecological interventions. Throughout time, the river has been used as a water resource for drinking and irrigation. It also once had an important role as a space for recreational activities. In 1968, the river was transformed from a natural, healthy and performing ecosystem to a canalized infrastructure, becoming an open sewer of domestic and industrial wastewater, highly polluted and posing numerous health risks to its neighbours. The river also lost its recreational and social function as people no longer had access to it. (1)
