'United Way' annual tree planting campaign

Fondo Unido Chihuahua, in collaboration with its corporate partners, is committed to raising awareness about environmental care and reforestation. One of its flagship initiatives is the annual tree-planting campaign, "Planting Today to Have Oxygen Tomorrow," organized by United Way Chihuahua in Ciudad Juárez. This environmental initiative focuses on improving the quality of different urban green spaces (parks, school grounds, streets) while fostering ecological awareness in vulnerable communities across the city. The primary objective is to plant a significant number of trees throughout Ciudad Juárez, using native species that are water-efficient and well-adapted to the local climate and soil. In 2022 the initiative aimed to reforest 18 parks located mainly in the south-eastern part of this border city with 1,000 trees. In 2023 and 2024 the intervention focused on planting 850 trees scatted all over the city.

The campaign brings together donations and volunteers through partnerships with various stakeholders, including local and regional governments, private companies, community organizations, and the general public.
United Way Chihuahua oversees the planning, coordination, and logistical efforts for the campaign. On planting days, volunteers gather at designated sites, guided by the organization to ensure successful planting efforts and community engagement (Ref 1-4).

BASIC Project Cartagena: integrated coastal water resource management

The BASIC Cartagena Project is an applied research initiative focused on developing tools for integrated coastal water resource management in Cartagena, Colombia (ref 4). It is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, and EAFIT University leads it in collaboration with the University of Los Andes, the University of Cartagena, the Foundation H.E.O., and the Regional Corporation CARDIQUE (ref 4). The goals are to reduce pollution, conserve ecosystem services, and implement climate change adaptation strategies in the coastal area (ref 3). The studies focus on Cartagena Bay (Recognized as the most polluted body of water in the Caribbean), the Dique Canal and the Magdalena River watershed, the local communities in the areas surrounding Cartagena Bay, principally the communities of Ararca and Barú (ref 5). During its first phase (2014-2017), the project concentrated on diagnosing pollution levels and sources. This included extensive monitoring of water quality and the socio-economic conditions of local communities (with a public health focus). The second phase (2018-2021) focused on developing early warning systems for pollution, educational programs, and knowledge transfer through community engagement. The third phase (2023) plans to expand the same activities from phase 1 & 2 to the Rosario and San Bernardo Islands, with continued collaboration among scientists, authorities, and local communities​ (ref 2, 3). Among its most significant achievements are the production of high-level scientific knowledge and the training provided to communities and environmental authorities. A notable impact of the project is its contribution to the formulation of seven policies, including the creation of an intersectoral committee for the environmental management of the Bay of Cartagena. This committee, for the first time, brings together various stakeholders, including fishing and tourism communities, to make decisions about environmental management (3)

Tempelhofer Field

Tempelhofer Feld stands as an innovative green solution in the heart of Berlin, addressing several issues of environmental justice, biodiversity, and urban resilience. Within the S-Bahn ring, only one in 20 residents lives in areas well-served by green spaces, and districts like Neukölln, Kreuzberg, and Tempelhof would face even greater scarcity without this vast expanse. Many residents in these neighborhoods lack access to private green spaces such as gardens or balconies. Without nearby parks, people are compelled to travel to other districts, exacerbating the congestion of green spaces and increasing local traffic.
Since its opening in 2010, Tempelhofer Feld has provided Berlin with over 300 hectares of open, green, leisure, and recreational space, making it one of the largest urban open spaces globally. Once the site of bustling air traffic, it is now a sanctuary for activities such as skating, strolling, gardening, picnicking, birdwatching, kiteboarding, and more. These wide-ranging uses showcase its transformation into an accessible, multifunctional green space that serves as a social equalizer, particularly for disadvantaged neighborhoods, a significance amplified during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The field is not just a recreational haven but also a vital ecological refuge. With over two-thirds of its area designated as green space, it hosts diverse ecosystems, including extensive natural meadows, lawns, and protected habitats for birds and other species. Certain areas are closed to the public to preserve these sensitive environments, emphasizing the balance between human activity and ecological conservation. Since 2019, animal landscape keepers, including around 100 resident sheep, have contributed to sustainable land management practices, promoting biodiversity and ecological health (Ref. 2).
Managed collaboratively by political, administrative, and societal actors, the site exemplifies integrated citizen participation in urban planning. (Ref. 3)

Upper Detroit Riverfront Parks Habitat Restoration

The Upper Detroit Riverfront Habitat and Parks Restoration Project aims to restore and enhance vital fish and wildlife habitats along the Detroit River. This initiative seeks to rehabilitate approximately 30 acres of upland and shoreline habitats within Riverfront-Lakewood East Park, A.B. Ford Park, and Mariners Park (all located alongside the river), covering nearly one mile of the Detroit River and its shorelines.
Key outcomes include improving approximately 1,000 linear feet of existing shoreline along the Detroit River by incorporating native wetland edges and fish spawning shelves into the restoration efforts. The project also plans to enhance around 2,000 linear feet of canal shoreline and 800 linear feet along Fox Creek to create or improve habitats for fish and herpetological species. In Riverfront-Lakewood East Park, 28 acres are targeted for the establishment or enhancement of native vegetation to support birds, mammals, and pollinators. If feasible, the creation of about 7 acres of wetlands, along with shallow and deep-water habitats, is also part of the vision.
The project is guided by the City of Detroit's 2017 Parks and Recreation Improvement Plan and represents part of a broader strategy to revitalize the city’s green spaces after years of underfunding. With renewed commitment, the city has allocated nearly $12 million to enhance neighborhood parks, particularly in areas that have lacked investment over the past decade.
However, the project was temporarily halted in 2020 due to high water levels causing flooding in the adjacent neighborhood. As of 2024, it remains on hold while the City of Detroit conducts a flood mitigation study. Despite this delay, the project remains a critical step toward fostering community stewardship and creating sustainable green spaces that improve the quality of life for all Detroit residents.

The Africatown Connections Blueway

The Africatown Connections Blueway project aims to create a recreational water trail by linking 14 culturally and historically significant points along a 10-mile route (Ref 1). Central to this initiative is the preservation of Africatown's rich heritage and natural resources. The project seeks to reconnect residents of Africatown, descendants of the original founders of this self-governing community, which maintained a strong sense of African cultural heritage, to waterways that were historically vital for food, transport, and spiritual practices (Ref 1). By restoring access to these waters, the community can address both environmental and social issues, promoting eco-tourism and business growth while safeguarding cultural heritage (Ref 2). Local leaders emphasize the environment’s role in healing the community and preserving history, highlighting how this initiative can provide economic opportunities and improve quality of life (Ref 2). The project seeks to address the environmental injustices that Africatown communities have endured for decades. The area surrounding Africatown has long been dominated by harmful industries, including aluminium plants and paper mills, which have heavily polluted the water and restricted residents' access to it (Ref 1). With support from the National Park Service and contributions from Mississippi State University, the Blueway transforms neglected river access points into recreational areas, promoting environmental stewardship and cultural awareness (Ref 2).

The Lower Salt River Restoration Project

The Lower Salt River Restoration Project (LSRRP) is a riparian restoration initiative located along the Lower Salt River within the Mesa Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest. This collaborative project seeks to restore a section of the Lower Salt River Recreation Area that was severely impacted by the 2017 Cactus Fire. The Cactus Fire was a significant wildfire that caused extensive damage to vegetation and habitat in the area, highlighting the need for targeted restoration efforts to rebuild the ecosystem and mitigate future fire risks.
The LSRRP’s primary activities focus on removing invasive tamarisk trees, which are highly flammable and contribute to the intensity of wildfires, and planting native seedlings to reestablish local flora. By removing tamarisk trees, the project aims to create a landscape that is more resistant to fire, reducing the wildfire risk for the region. Additionally, the project supports the abundance and diversity of native plant species by removing invasive plants and planting thousands of native riparian tree species.
The restoration efforts also aim to enhance the riparian habitat by expanding two critical vegetation communities—the mesquite bosque and the cottonwood-willow gallery forest. These communities support rich biodiversity and offer essential habitats for local wildlife.
Beyond ecological restoration, the project emphasizes community involvement and awareness. It provides opportunities for the local community to participate in the project through environmental education events for K-12 students and ongoing volunteer involvement in monitoring and maintaining restored areas.
Overall, the Lower Salt River Restoration Project is a proactive effort to protect and revitalize the Lower Salt River Recreation Area, enhancing its ecological resilience and engaging the community in long-term conservation. (2-4, 6, 8, 11)

Green Corridor Südpanke

The Green Corridor Südpanke is a transformative restoration project that unveiled 700 meters of the river Südpanke, connecting Invalidenpark and Südpankepark in the heart of Berlin. This initiative, part of Berlin's broader mission to restore the Panke River, was spearheaded by the state of Berlin with a focus on ecological restoration, biodiversity enhancement, microclimate cooling, and creating recreational spaces to improve the quality of life for residents (Ref. 2; Ref. 3).
Historically, the river in this area was channeled underground. The project brought the Südpanke back to the surface, integrating ecological principles and landscape planning into the design. The restored section of the river now flows openly in a natural watercourse bed, making it accessible to the public (Ref. 5). The restoration was completed in 2021, transforming the area with features such as playgrounds, lawns, benches, and a continuous biking and walking path that weaves through the green spaces.
Work on the project began in 2010 but was interrupted by the construction of the neighboring headquarters of the Federal Intelligence Service. As a result, parts of the green corridor were opened to the public in 2012, with the full restoration completed nearly a decade later, in 2021 (Ref. 3; Ref. 6).
The project established a seamless connection for cyclists and pedestrians from Invalidenpark in the south to Südpankepark in the north. The new open water section cools the microclimate in Berlin's densely built-up center while providing a critical habitat for plants and animals. Embankments and meadows near the Federal Intelligence Service's property support wild bees and other pollinators, fostering biodiversity. The Green Corridor Südpanke is a vibrant example of how urban ecological restoration can contribute to sustainability, quality of life, and resilience in a growing city. (Ref. 2)

FoodLink Food transition network

FoodLink, a network for food transition in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA), aims to create sustainable, competitive, and resilient agri-food systems closely integrated with regional and local spatial planning. The network's goals are to promote food security, economic and energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and socio-territorial cohesion by 2030. The network seeks to ensure that by 2030, 15% of the metropolitan area's food supply is secured locally through sustainable production methods, innovative solutions in water management, soil conservation, climate adaptation, and low-carbon distribution networks involving community gardens, urban allotments, and agricultural spaces within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Roof Water Farm

The ROOF WATER-FARM is an innovative demonstration site located in the heart of Berlin, near Potsdamer Platz, showcasing sustainable urban infrastructure that integrates wastewater treatment and food production. Situated in the "Block 6" quarter of the 1987 International Building Exhibition in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the site transforms wastewater and rainwater collected from nearby buildings into usable resources for farming and fertilizer production (Ref. 1). This project provides a real-world example of how sustainable systems can be incorporated into everyday urban design to enhance resilience and functionality.

At the ROOF WATER-FARM, water from rooftops and surrounding households is channeled into a treatment plant, where it is analyzed for micropollutants and purified. The treated water is then used for both fish farming in aquaponics systems and plant irrigation in hydroponic farming. The nutrient-rich water from the fish tanks nourishes plants, while also contributing to the production of food. This integrated approach actively supports climate protection by managing rainwater runoff and using plants for CO2 storage, helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect (Ref. 4).

This demonstration site embodies how cities can move toward a circular economy, where wastewater is reused for both farming and water management. The project also serves as a hub for learning and experimentation in sustainable urban design, with the greenhouse acting as a space for collaboration and innovation in infrastructure development (Ref. 2; Ref. 5). By incorporating these technologies into urban environments, the ROOF WATER-FARM demonstrates a future where buildings and neighborhoods efficiently recycle water, produce food, and reduce environmental impact.

Belt Line Center PACE-funded Green Roof

The Belt Line Center building, located in Detroit, Michigan, property of Letts Industries, features a green-blue roof, along with a rain garden, showcasing the benefits of green infrastructure in historic properties. The idea for this retrofit emerged in 2015 after a major renovation, when Chip Letts, CEO of Letts Industries, recognized the potential of green infrastructure for long-term energy efficiency and storm-water management.
The initiative gained momentum in 2018, following the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's (DWSD) introduction of new drainage fees, which charged $750 per acre of impermeable surfaces. The DWSD also offered up to 80% discounts for properties implementing green solutions, further incentivizing the project.
The project officially began in 2020 after securing PACE funding (Property Assessed Clean Energy funding, a financing mechanism that enables property owners to fund energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation projects) from CounterpointeSRE (financial institution), marking the first use of commercial PACE financing for a green roof in Michigan. The green roof, covering 17,250 square feet, includes 300 square feet of pedestal pavers and a 2,500 square foot blue roof. These features enhance stormwater management, energy efficiency, and roof longevity; the center also incorporates two beehives to support local biodiversity.
These systems work in tandem with the ground-level rain garden to capture and infiltrate stormwater runoff, significantly reducing the impact on Detroit’s stormwater system. The project aligns with the city’s broader sustainability goals, including the Beltline Greenway initiative, which will pass directly behind the property, integrating the building into Detroit’s expanding network of green spaces and bike paths.
The Belt Line Center serves as a model for revitalizing historic buildings through innovative financing and sustainable design, enhancing Detroit’s environmental resilience. (Ref.1-5)
