Agriparc De Mas Nouguier
Short description of the intervention
The agriparc of the Mas Nouguier is an agricultural reserve entirely maintained by the city of Montpellier. Conducted in organic agriculture, the estate contributes to the preservation of the identity of the territory and to the valorization of the living environment. Accessible to all, it offers a beautiful walk in the middle of the vineyards. Apiaries are used to develop educational workshops and to collect honey with school children. Olive trees, centennial pines and a large meadow come to embellish this little bit of countryside in town (Ref. 1).

Goals of the intervention
Production, Education, Recreation purposes:
-"A part of the space is exploited by the town hall as an agriparc where vines, olive groves and hives are pedagogical supports for the public" (Ref. 2)
-A social vocation (creation of 13 jobs with employment of 80% of persons with disabilities) (Ref. 7, article June 2017)
-"The Mas Nouguier, little known even the neighbors, is currently the object of plantations of at least 200 trees that will enhance the roads. Muriers, plane trees, pines and maples will bring a little shade through the vineyards. While ash, poplar and weeping soils will surround the retention basins and will gradually mask the industrial zone and the high voltage lines over the course of the seasons" (Ref. 3).
-Four issues are associated with it: a cultural issue, that of preserving a wine heritage, an agricultural issue with the preservation of a functional wine estate, an urban landscape issue as a green space, an environmental issue because it is 'part of the Montpellier green network and includes two water retention basins. A new stake expressed by the green spaces department is quickly added to these first 4 challenges: making the agripark a conservatory of wine and agricultural varieties. The agripark was included in the 2010-2014 biodiversity plan bringing together actions carried out in favor of the environment" (Ref. 10).
-"This emblematic site of nature in Montpellier owes its preservation and agricultural development to the will of the city." (Ref. 5
- The guiding idea is that “everything that is planted in the park must be valuable, food plants, fruit trees, berries, herbal tea plants,…” (Ref. 10). "where the food plants cultivated according to the principles of agroecology carry both a landscape and a production function" (Ref. 10).

The wine is intended for an auction whose amount is returned to charities and the other part is used in pots of friendship and events." (Ref. 3)
-In 2010, while concerting with local authorities towards the future of the Mas Nougier area, Serge Fleurence (first deputy mayor delegated to the quality of public space) "had a decree signed to forbid the hunting immediately" in order to already took actions to protect animal life on the site. (Ref. 2)
-"The investment of inter-municipal authorities in a planning process taking into account agricultural areas, then in an agroecological and food policy, the municipality's desire to carry out a biodiversity policy and to stage a reinvented agricultural landscape, have registered their footprints in the agripark" (Ref. 10).
-"Urbanism Plan (Ref. 5): "The protection and development of this green lung are at the heart of its action, particularly in terms of land use planning and the preservation of natural areas within the framework of its local urban planning plan."
-"by using animal traction, it limits the use of heat engines, and the associated greenhouse gas emissions" (Ref. 5).

Impacts, benefits
Description of environmental benefits
Climate change
-Reduced emissions: "by using animal traction, it limits the use of heat engines, and the associated greenhouse gas emissions" (Ref. 5).

Environmental quality
-Soil protection and amelioration: "Other environmental measures are also taken, such as the sowing this fall of grasses between the rows of vines, to preserve biodiversity and to fight against soil compaction" (Ref. 5). "- due to the small working width of the crew, it reduces the soil compaction of the plowed rows" (Ref. 5).

Water management and blue areas:
-Improved stormwater management: "it is 'part of the Montpellier green network and includes two water retention basins" (Ref. 10).

Green space and habitat
-Increased green space area: quantitative, by purchasing the land the city ensured 300 000 m^2 of green space was maintained.
-Increased conservation or restoration of ecosystems (local habitats for local species)/reduction of biodiversity loss/enhanced support of pollination: "This place is also very populated by a fauna and an important flora at the doors of the city. It offers rodents and birds enough to feed and nest. As now all the municipal green spaces, the agriparc is led totally in organic cultivation, which allows precisely the cohabitation with the apiary. This emblematic site of nature in Montpellier owes its preservation and agricultural development to the will of the city." (Ref. 5)

Restoration of derelict areas: ash, poplar and weeping soils surround the retention basins and gradually mask the industrial zone and the high voltage lines over the course of the seasons (Ref. 3).
Biodiversity enhancement, pollination thanks to bees and sustainable production of honey (Ref. 9)
Description of economic benefits
-Increase of jobs: creation of 13 jobs with employment of 80% of persons with disabilities (Ref. 7, article June 2017) at start-up, but this number is expected to grow (Ref. 7).

-Increase in agricultural production (for profit or not): "The City of Montpellier, located in the heart of this vineyard, has undertaken for several years an original and innovative action, around the promotion of wine and its own vineyard. This global approach between a large city and a quality union, recognized Grand Cru du Languedoc, is unique in France and testifies to a common desire to promote the terroir and support an economic sector" (Ref. 9).

-Generation of income from NBS/sustainable tourism: "“The first, which would start next year, will focus on "organic market gardening and viticulture, wine tourism, the maintenance of green spaces on and around the Estate", while the second will concern services. It should be able to start in 2019, the restoration of the building on the Estate to be delivered at the end of 2018 (start of work next October). The association will rent seminar rooms there, host events” (Ref. 7). "the 12 hectares of vineyard allows an annual production close to 15 000 bottles" (Ref. 9).
Please specify other environmental justice issue
sustainable production and consumption: "where the food plants cultivated according to the principles of agroecology carry both a landscape and a production function" (Ref. 10).
universal appeal to NBS effort by including functional diversities: creation of 13 jobs with employment of 80% of persons with disabilities (Ref. 7, article June 2017) at start-up, but this number is expected to grow (Ref. 7).
Description of social and cultural benefits
Social justice and cohesion
-Fair distribution of social, environmental and economic benefits of the NBS project: The city owning the vineyard means that social, environmental, and economic benefits are fairly distributed (Ref. 7, 8, and 9).
-Improved access to urban green space: "Accessible to all, it offers a beautiful walk in the middle of the vineyards and the space surrounding the old mansion allows you to rest for a picnic break" (Ref. 1).
-Increased opportunities for social interaction/social cohesion: “A collective of citizens initiated the creation of a shared garden, a place of social bond and learning in gardening; locals come to pick aromatic plants “ (Ref. 10).
-Increased visibility and opportunity for marginalized groups or indigenous peoples: creation of 13 jobs with employment of 80% of persons with disabilities (Ref. 7, article June 2017) at start-up, but this number is expected to grow (Ref. 7).
-Improvement of sustainable agriculture practices/healthy accessible food: "an agroecological redevelopment project for the entire park. The guiding idea is that “everything that is planted in the park must be valuable, food plants, fruit trees, berries, herbal tea plants,…” (Ref. 10). "where the food plants cultivated according to the principles of agroecology carry both a landscape and a production function" (Ref. 10).

Health and wellbeing
-Gain in activities for recreation and exercise: “A collective of citizens initiated the creation of a shared garden, a place of social bond and learning in gardening; locals come to pick aromatic plants “ (Ref. 10).

Cultural heritage and sense of place
-Protection of natural heritage: “This global approach between a large city and a quality union, recognized Grand Cru du Languedoc, is unique in France and testifies to a common desire to promote the territory and support an economic sector” (Ref. 9). "here old grape varieties rub shoulders with original grape varieties and local grape varieties, all of these different planting, maturation and pruning practices" (Ref. 1).
-Protection of historic and cultural landscape / infrastructure: "It should be able to start in 2019, the restoration of the building on the Estate to be delivered at the end of 2018 (start of work next October). The association will rent seminar rooms there, host events" (Ref. 7).
-Increased sense of place identity, memory and belonging: "Conducted in organic farming, the estate contributes to the preservation of the identity of the territory and to the enhancement of the living environment" (Ref. 1).
-Increased awareness of flora and fauna as culturally and historically meaningful: grape varieties rub shoulders with original grape varieties and local grape varieties, (Ref 1)

Education
-Increased knowledge of locals about local nature/increased awareness/education support: "Educational activities are implemented with schools and leisure centers in the City. During the first years, participatory harvests are organized with the inhabitants of Montpellier. The initial project is therefore a leisure park with an educational dimension, essentially focused on the staging of viticulture, heritage culture" (Ref. 10).

COVID-19 pandemic
Ref. 8 indicates that a event planned for May (a gastronomic walk on the site) was postponed until May 2021 (as of August 4, 2020):

"After taking the opinions of a large number of people and in view of the evolution of the situation and the various simulations in progress, the Vignerons des Grés de Montpellier have decided to postpone the “Balade aux Grés de Montpellier” in 2021, so it will be May 9, 2021.

However, to do nothing in 2020 would be a shame, and not to celebrate the return of outer life would be unfortunate. This is why it was also decided to hold an event in two parts around our Big Tasting of the TOP 10 usually reserved for professionals. We were planning another one around our winegrowers and gastronomy in a festive setting, in mid-October. We will be waiting for you there with great pleasure.

We will come back to you to present this renaissance event with the Vignerons des Grés de Montpellier.'
