A pilot educational garden was created by Foundation Zaedno in Sofia in 2011 in the city kindergarten Slaveyche. The initiative was carried out with the financial support of Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and volunteers. The aims of the garden were to turn a derelict site into an attractive place for learning about and practicing gardening, playing games, learning about healthy nutrition, conservation, and promoting the creation of other Delicious Bio-Gardens. The garden has herbs, vegetables, and a rainwater harvesting system. Events connected to this initiative were taking place till 2013-14 (Ref. 1; Ref. 2; Ref. 4)

Type of innovation
Please specify social innovation
"The establishment of the first delicious bio-garden in Sofia is considered to be the introduction of a social innovation supporting the alternative education of children and adults. It is focused on education through experience and creates positive qualities and creative approach towards the world we live in. The initiative turns the preservation of the environment not only into a modern „green” idea but into a whole new lifestyle. The participants in the bio-garden are taught how to grow their food alone, love it and respect it. At the end all sit at a common table and enjoy the bio-food they have grown." (Ref. 2)
- The garden is an innovative educational element because it allows teachers to combine many different themes and present them to the kids in an interactive, easy, and attractive way (Ref. 1)
Please specify novelty level of the innovation
The Delicious Bio-garden in kindegarten Slaveyche was based on a very popular practice around the world for "implementing ecological education through experience", which "encourages the establishment of self-supporting communities." "The Biogarden is an innovative educational instrument uniting many and different topics and developing in children and adults sustainable habits for a healthy way of life and preservation of the environment." (Ref. 2; Ref. 3). Based on these descriptions, it can be inferred that the intervention in Sofia was copied without substantial adaptation.
Please specify Replicability/Transferability
The intervention was a pilot project aimed at testing the effectiveness of the Delicious Bio-Garden in Sofia and promoting the creation of other Delicious Bio-Gardens in the capital. As a result, 10 other gardens have been realized in Sofia since 2012. (Ref. 1; Ref 4; Ref. 7)

It is very unlikely that the garden was influenced by any policies/strategies/programmes - it was a completely voluntary project.

The Impacts text was modified. The "Social Justice" category includes "meeting place for local residents", "increase quality of life", and "community spirit". I thought these were relevant to the stated impacts.
"Regeneration, land use..." - selected due to the fact that a derelict site was transformed into a garden ("promote naturalistic styles of landscape design; enhanced nature beauty and aesthetical experiences").
"Water management" selected because there is a rainwater harvesting installation in the garden.
"inclusive and effective governance" selected because of the "community-based activities (e.g. communal clean-up, river- bank greening and community gardening); citizen involvement" features.
Unfortunately, even though the locals liked the initiative very much, there is no mention of any impact monitoring
