A green roof of the total area of 362 m2 was established in a modernized historic neighbourhood in the centre of Bydgoszcz. The rooftop serves aesthetic and recreational purposes for the residents and visitors. Selected plants retain as much as 40-99% of rainwater and absorb air pollution [1].

View Island in Reading is a relaxing island with natural open space with grassy paths and seating near to the weir at Caversham Lock. A conservation project has been carried out to e.g. improve water flow, improve biodiversity, and improve the entrance to and around the island. The work has been carried out in consultation with Reading Borough Council, the Environment Agency and has been designed and constructed by Riverworks Ltd. (Ref, 1, 2, 3)

The NBS is a large green roof on top of "ATRIUM PARK", which is a modern neighbourhood of 4 buildings in Bydgoszcz. The spacious green park of 5,000 m2 is located on the roof of a multi-storey garage that extends under all buildings. It is divided into zones: a playground, an area for active recreation, and the relaxation area. The description of the project stresses its beneficial effects on the health and well-being of the residents [1].

Focus Park is a large shopping mall with green terraces (900 m2) and green walls in the city of Bydgoszcz. The project serves marketing purposes – the green areas outside the mall are visible from various vantage points. Due to the selection of pollution resistant plants and installation of an automatic irrigation system the project also involves water retention and supports local biodiversity and good air quality [1].

A rehabilitation clinic in Bydgoszcz opened a rooftop garden for its patients. The garden was established in 1998 on the total area of 1 790 m2. The initiative was created with children of the Paediatrics Clinic in mind so that they could look at the garden instead of a concrete roof from their windows. Plants were designed in a way that their fragrances and colours are respective of the time of the day and the year. The spruce was also planted in the garden to be decorated as a Christmas tree in winter [1].

The green roof and courtyard/patio on a new campus building of the University of Applied Sciences consist of trees and plants that reduce temperature and improve air quality. The plants are grown on a thick substrate layer that allows for extra stormwater storage. The vegetation also provides habitat for species such as insects, filters particulates from the air and reduces noise, and creates aesthetic value for patients in a nearby hospital (Ref. 1).

On an office building, one of the largest green walls of Belgium was created (50.000 plants) that improves air quality, reduces heat stress, and improves biodiversity. The green wall also isolates the building, resulting in less energy use (Ref. 1-3). The wall consists of a variety of native plants and is irrigated with water collected on the roof of the building (Ref. 1, 2).

Management of natural lime-dry grasslands on gravel banks in Augsburg is conducted by the Landcape Association of the City of Augsburg (Bavaria, Germany). 300 ha of biotopes within the municipal area is maintained due to sheep grazing, mowing management, scrub clearance and reopening of potential expansion areas as well as further activities to create initial stages of immature soils and recreational purposes (Ref. 1).

The park was reconstructed by the municipality of Sofia in order to improve the local living environment and provide suitable conditions for rest, recreation, and sport. Actions included restoring the lake by reconstructing the bank, restoring flower gardens by adding 80 000 new flowers, and restoring green areas.

A roof garden of about 370 square meters was built on the new building of the Diakonissenklinik in the course of the general renovation. The new intensive greening of the roof can be seen from many hospital wards and serves as an additional recreation facility for its patients (Ref. 1).
