Rain Garden in the Lagoa do Nado Park

A rain garden has been implemented at the Fazenda Lagoa do Nado Municipal Park in Belo Horizonte. The rain garden has been created as "a solution that contributes to the runoff of rainwater, allowing the water to be filtered through vegetation and infiltrate into the soil", with this type of solution being recognised as a method which "recharge[s] the water table, increases biodiversity, improves the local microclimate and air quality" (Ref. 1). The rain garden has been created as a demonstration project within the wider INTERACT-Bio project which is led by the global Local Governments for Sustainability network, ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives) (Ref. 1). As summarised by President of the Municipal Parks and Zoobotany Foundation of Belo Horizonte, Sérgio Augusto Domingues, “This is an important experiment that enables solutions based on nature. The idea is that it, like other mechanisms, complements macro-drainage interventions, helping the city to be more resilient to extreme events related to climate change" (Ref. 3).
According to the Municipality of Belo Horizonte, the Multiannual Government Action Plan (PPAG) aims to implement 30 rain gardens in the municipality by 2025, each garden having an area of ​​150 square meters (Ref. 7).

Green Lungs of the City

The municipal government of the Yiwu city in China has launched the Green Lungs of the City Project (GLCP) in 2019. The overarching goal was to build a green lung, which will create more green spaces for residents in Yiwu, mitigate environmental pressures and improve the city's resilience to climate change. Under the project, a green corridor was created to reconnect the roads, rivers, ponds and lakes where different tree species were planted. Additionally, wetlands were constructed and restored to improve resilience against climate change disasters. The project is still in the ongoing phase, and a forest-wetland ecological park is under development in the city's central area. The GLCP aims to use different types of NBS elements to promote sustainable urban development and to provide multiple ecosystem services to the citizens in a highly urbanised area. [1]

All Shaheed Park

Al Shaheed Park is the largest park in the country. The park was designed to include besides its green spaces, several buildings (museums, parking) populated with green roofs and an artificial lake. The size of the park with all the mentioned grey and green elements stands at 20 ha. The park is viewed as an encompassing part of a green belt that surrounds the city of Kuwait. From an environmental point of view, the park was built to protect the city from sandstorms and to reduce air pollution. From a cultural point of view, the park and the museums are providing the public with high-quality programs, events and spaces, and part of their mission is to spread awareness and educate the public on the importance of the country’s land, history and environment, in addition to the encouragement of international and regional exchange of arts. In addition, the park is meant to commemorate the victims of the first Gulf War. (1,2,3)

Salvador, Capital of the Atlantic Forest

Recognising the benefits which urban forests bring to its citizens, Salvador has committed to protecting and restoring the Atlantic Forest, and has developed its own local framework which goes beyond national requirements (Ref. 1). The city has launched several programmes under its 'Salvador, Capital da Mata Atlantica' initiative, which together aim to restore the forest which has "suffered from severe deforestation" (Ref. 1). Included under the umbrella initiative are programmes such as the "'Delivery of trees', recovery of parks and collective planting" (Ref. 4).

Cache la Poudre River Restoration

The City of Fort Collins is "taking steps to restore flows, fish passage, and ecological function" of Colorado's Cache la Poudre River (Ref. 6). The river was "heavily manipulated for irrigation and mining" throughout the early 20th century (Ref. 6), and today continues subject to the impacts of gravel mining, agriculture and urbanisation (Ref. 1). Regional climate change predictions further complicate our ability "to understand how the river’s hydrology and ecology may respond to warming climate scenarios" (Ref. 1).
The City of Fort Collins was, therefore "invested heavily in this urban river through extensive planning efforts, purchase of approximately 700 hectares of lands within the river’s floodplain, projects to address stormwater control and conveyance, water quality management, and acquisition of in-stream flow water rights", and in 2011, the City’s Natural Areas Department published the Cache la Poudre River Natural Areas Management Plan which outlined "opportunities and challenges in supporting the river’s ecological function and reducing risks to life and property during significant flood events", particularly through the implementation of nature-based solutions (Ref. 1). A suite of nature-based solutions has since been proposed and implemented by the City of Fort Collins, two of which are the Sterling Pond Ecological Restoration (also referred to as North Shields Ponds), and the McMurry Natural Area Ecological Restoration (Refs. 1 and 2).

Asunción Green City of the Americas - Pathways to Sustainability project

Under Sustainable Development Goal 11 (make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable) in 2017 a coalition of stakeholders including the Municipality of Asuncion started the implementation of an initiative focused on improving the quality of life in the Metropolitan Area of Asunción through green infrastructure in a sustainable and resilient city framework. Why Asuncion? Cities and metropolitan areas are fundamental centres of economic growth: they contribute approximately 60% of world GDP. However, they also account for around 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions and more than 60% of resource use. Asuncion makes no distinction - it is a city with a high flow of cars and transportation, irregular flooding (the sewerage system there has already been exceeded for some time), and urban growth. Trying to respond to some of these challenges, the present intervention has been proposed with a duration of 5 years. (1,2)

Montevideo's Rain Gardens

Uruguay is highly vulnerable to climate change and its cities particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, including extreme events such as droughts, floods, heat and cold waves, strong winds, tornadoes, hailstorms, frosts, heavy rains and severe storms. According to the latest census in Uruguay, more than 93 per cent of its population lives in urban areas. Montevideo is one of Uruguay's cities most affected by the changing weather. In 2014 most of the city has been left underwater after suffering its worst flooding in 50 years so much so that the city was declared a multi-hazard risk zone. Thousands of homes and businesses have been damaged in the process. This has been described as the worst flooding in almost a century. In 2018 the municipality developed the idea of rain gardens to counteract heavy rains and flooding effects. Initially, it was adopted in a number of neighbourhoods but over the years it has been extended to the entire area of Montevideo (1,2,3)

Building coastal resilience for Muanda’s communities

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s coastal zone stretches 40 km and comprises the towns of Muanda, Banana and Nsiamfumu. The problem of coastal erosion has intensified since 1980 with the significant retreat of the coast in the Banana-Muanda segment, this retreat has been estimated as much as 2,300 meters. According to the report of the second national communication on climate change (2010), the Democratic Republic of Congo’s coastal zone, with a coastline of about 40km, is facing coastal erosion due to a combined effect of topography, sandy nature of the soil and ocean dynamics (height and direction of the swell, tide height, current velocity, storms etc.). With the rate of shoreline retreat that is likely, it is expected that the road between Banana-Muanda will be completely lost between 2050 and 2100. The proportion of lands lost to encroaching sea will double (200 m around Nsiamfumu and 100 m between Muanda city and Banana). In total, DRC can expect to see the reach of its coastal zone reduced from 50-100 m by 2100. To respond to some of these complex challenges the Department of Environment, Nature Conservation and Tourism, Democratic Republic of Congo implemented the present intervention partnering with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Jerusalem Forest Preservation

The Jerusalem Forest is located southwest of Jerusalem and is the green lung of the residents of Israel's capital. The forest has a variety of trees, flowers and wildlife, remains of ancient farming implements and burial caves (2). The forest was planted in the 1950s in an attempt to increase the green cover and natural biodiversity of the area. However, due to intensive urban development including road constructions and energy grid installation and forest fires the size of the forest has been shrinking once covering 4 700 000 m2 to the current size of 1 250 000m2. In 2016, a non-governmental green organisation initiated the renewing of the Jerusalem Forest with the aim to preserve the forest, halt its decrease, secure its sustainable maintenance while involving the public in the conservation efforts increasing their environmental knowledge about their local habitat and support nature stewardship through the application of a community forest model. Three Bays Protected Area

As a result of a ReefFix Project, an Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Coral Reef and Mangrove Restoration and Watershed Management Demonstration programme, the Three Bays Marine Protected Area (MPA) and associated Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Plan have been established in Haiti (Refs. 4, 5 and 7). Only the second MPA to be established in the country, the Three Bays MPA includes the bays of Limonade, Caracol and Ft. Liberté (the administrative capital of the Nord-East department of Haiti), as well as the Lagon aux Boeufs. As summarised by Ref. 8, the establishment of the MPA and ICZM "will help protect the mangroves, eel grass beds, reefs and habitats housing important fisheries that are crucial for providing livelihoods to nearby communities. It will also help protect the area from storm surges and provide local communities with ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, tourism value and more". Additionally, the MPA will afford protection to numerous threatened species, "including sea turtles, whales, manatees and migratory birds" (Ref. 8).
