Eradiaction of invasive species

An intervention in the parks of Sintra relying on volunteer participation to eradicate invasive species from the green areas. The intervention was carried out on International Volunteer Day and volunteers removed the exotic weed species manually.
The manual work with volunteering was carried out in more sensitive places where herbicide can not be applied (water lines, protected habitats, etc ...) (ref.5)

Therapy through horticulture

The author of the project (visualized, not completed) designed a recreation area for youth from schools, dormitories and people interested in need of horticultural therapy in one of the school courtyards in Białystok. The project would involve revitalization and modernization of the school’s courtyard to adapt it to the needs of people with disabilities and adequately manage the greenery around. The garden would allow for therapeutic work with plants, art therapy, and activities that support the mental and physical health of the participants [1,3].
In 2015 the project was in envisioned and pitched only, but it did not receive funding from the participatory budget of Białystok.

Recreation in 'Jaroszowka'

The NBS is located on a previously neglected basketball and other games fields with obsolete and long unused equipment. Owing to the citizens’ initiative, the municipality built a new sport and leisure site at the Jaroszowka housing estate in Białystok. The project has increased social integration between different generations and provided a comfortable, safe and surrounded by nature space for sports and recreation. The project involved the planting of greenery, building a multifunctional playground and a multisport field, and it was complemented by benches, toilets, CCTV, and lights [1,2,4].

Boulevards in the housing estate of Bacieczki

In 2016, owing to the participatory budget of Białystok, the citizens received a long-awaited outdoor gym and playground in the vacant green area of the city. The initiative aimed to increase public access to the green recreational area in the city, and connect the Białka riverside with residential boroughs. The project involved greenery planting and re-arrangement of the greenery (including some deforestation), revitalization of a pond and water purification, connecting walking and bicycle paths. Lawns are available for family picnics and recreation [1,2].



Abandoibarra's Green Oasis

Abandoibarra is an area of ​​the town of Bilbao, next to the Bilbao estuary, sizing ​​348,500 square meters. Abandoibarra has been the industrial zone of Bilbao, where shipyards and other companies related to the industrial sector were located. Building upon the 1997 master plan completed by Balmori Associates, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and Aguinaga y Asociados, the area has been reinvented as an international cultural district and tourist destination. Two-thirds of the 30-hectare site is dedicated to parks and open spaces, creating a public oasis and grounds for a suite of buildings by master architects (Ref 1,2).

Urban Forest

The Urban Forest project represents an increase of urban trees in the city. There will be two phases of this project. In the first, it consists of a transformation of an eye-sore and abandoned space, around previous Canodrome, into a large urban forest (Ref 1, 9). The second one will be located in the land of the velodrome of Es Tirador. This projec has been delaid due to unforeseen costs (Ref 10).

The square of silence in Mariampol, Bydgoszcz

Owing to the city’s participatory budget, the residents created a well-equipped green recreational square in a vacant area of one of Bydgoszcz's neighbourhoods. The initiative involved the creation of an outdoor gym with several exercise equipment stations, as well as planting pollution-resistant trees and bushes - including oaks, maples, pine and spruce. The initiative aims to manage vacant space and increase access to the green space in this city district [1].

More trees and shrubs by the city lake

The initiative was funded from the participatory budget of the city and resulted in planting new greenery (including 70 trees and a thousand shrubs) by the local city lake 'Balaton' in Bydgoszcz. The justification of the project in its proposal highlights the practical and aesthetic values of green areas [1].

Arrenberg climate district: Arrenbergfarm

Based on an urban regeneration project in the city district of Arrenberg, an association called “Awakening of the Arrenberg” formed in 2008, consisting of citizens, entrepreneurs and real estate owners seeking to transform their district. Under the umbrella of the project “climate quarter Arrenberg” initiated in 2014, whose goal is to make the district CO2 neutral by 2030, the development of a city farm covering 60,000 sqm on former railway premises - a Europe-wide unique project in urban farming – is one of their most important plans that make up their vision of becoming carbon neutral. (Ref. 1, 2 and 3). The goal of the farm is to produce healthy and locally produced food, while creating employment opportunities and remaining carbon-neutral, using power only from the sustainable power plant that will be installed for the project. (Ref. 2) In February 2020, the implementation has not yet started, but the “Awakening of the Arrenberg” association says the vision of the urban farm is stronger than ever before and that the project has received funding approval, with experts now working on feasibility studies. (Ref. 8).

Foz do Douro Urban Park

The Foz do Douro Urban Park located in the west of Porto city is a green area for public use inserted into a recently developed urban area, which has been progressively been built along the Atlantic seafront since the nineteenth century and the Park is part of an overall project submitted in the competition Nuno Álvares Avenue Plan promoted by the Porto Municipality. With approximately 5ha, Foz do Douro Urban Park clearly contributes to increasing the rates of existing green areas for public use, increasing the availability of open spaces for the local and regional level.
