Alicante coastal corridor

The initiative is comprised of a project to recover the coastal line of Alicante, from El Campello to Elx (approx. 21 km long). The Municipality called an ideas' competition with the aim of developing a sustainable coastal corridor project that includes an intervention on the entire Alicante coastline and generates a continuous itinerary integrated into the landscape with new places of opportunity for the residents of the city (Ref. 7). The two-stage competition sought proposals for a new ‘coastal passage’ featuring the creation of new multi-purpose public spaces promoting biodiversity and accessibility (Ref 13). The winner was announced on the beginning of 2019 and the Municipality planned to start the development of the first 2 parts of the project. The winning project of the competition bears the slogan "My connected archipelago" and is the work of the Grupo Aranea and Subarquitectura studios from Alicante (Ref 14), a project that considers ecological and sustainable principles (Ref. 9).

Vegetable barriers at the Port of Alicante

The Port of Alicante is finalizing the installation of a new environmental barrier at Pier 17, where bulk unloading is carried out, based on a water atomization method that allows dust particles to fall to the ground of the port area and not arrive by air to the city. (Ref 11) This initiative comprises activities to reduce pollution in the port, such as a vegetable barrier against the air pollution produced by the dust during the unloading of bulk materials, supplied by an irrigation system that recovers non-drinkable water from a nearby plant. It includes the extension of the Parque del Mar, to recover historical points for tourism and the funding of a research project on air pollution (Ref. 12). “This measure is integrated within the Plan of Urban Integration of the Port of Alicante, improving the landscape impact and the port-city boundary zones from the southern access of the urban environment, along with the “Parque del Mar”, to the west zone with the installation of vegetal screens in the inner zone of the port, contributing to an important particle retention and CO2 reduction.” (Ref. 1). Inside the park, which can be traversed through paths, there is a small ornamental lake with rockery and it has children's games and petanque courts, gymnastics courts and recreational areas. The green corridor has been created with the creation of artificial mounds, for which 65,000 cubic meters of earth have been necessary, which act as a vegetal screen and visually and acoustically isolate the port facilities of the city. For a more beautiful Ljubljana: spring cleaning

Each year, since 2003 between 22 March, World Water Day, and 22 April, World Earth Day, the traditional spring cleaning campaign For a More Beautiful Ljubljana (Za lepšo Ljubljano) is in progress in Ljubljana. The basic goal of the For a More Beautiful Ljubljana campaign is to give a thorough spring clean to functional areas across the City of Ljubljana, and those taking part include Departments within the City Administration, the City’s District Authorities, public companies united within Ljubljana Public Holdings, City of Ljubljana public institutes and various Ljubljana societies. CityTree

The Urban Ecology Agency of Oslo (Bymiljøetaten) installed two CityTrees in the city of Oslo to act as green lungs in the city and reduce air pollution. The two CityTrees were placed at the Solli plass by Sommerrogata and on Nordraaks plass, close to Slottsparken. The CityTree is an environmentally-friendly plant wall with benches. (Ref. 2) It is an invention of a German company, Green City Solutions, and acts both as an aesthetically attractive furniture for resting, while simultaneously combating air pollution in city centres. (Ref. 1)

Nature reserve project Lärjeåns dalgång

The city's nature conservation project in Göteborg includes ongoing work on making Lärjeån's valley (Lärjeåns dalgång) a natural reserve. The purpose of forming a nature reserve for Lärjeån valley (Lärjeåns dalgång) is to ensure the area's great natural and cultural landscape and outdoor life values. Parts of the area are of national interest for nature conservation and are also part of the EU's protected nature conservation network, Natura 2000. The ravine landscape of Lärjeån is home to some very interesting flora and fauna like salmon, trout and pearl mussel. The consultation for the project has ended. Comments received during the consultation period are currently being processed. Preliminary new information is yet to come on how the case will be pursued. The nature reserve will be formed with the support of the Environmental Code. (Ref. 1, 7 , 8)

Development of Public Orchard and Nectar Garden

As part of the title Green Capital of Europe, Ljubljana planted the first public orchard. The public orchard is open to citizens and visitors of the city, where fruits are available from mid-summer to late autumn. One part of the orchard includes a plantation of old varieties of apple, plum and pear, while the other includes trees species little known. The public orchard and nectar garden are intended for residents, passersby, volunteers, groups of pre-schoolers, families and educational organisations. The nectar garden is enriched by an innovative didactic adventure trail that winds around the nectar garden. Next to the nectar garden is a hotel for insects and bird feeder intended to promote biodiversity and raise awareness about nature conservation. Nearby is also a renovated playground for children. Three such orchards have been created in Rakovi jelši, Savski naselj and Puhtejeva ulica. The arrangement of the public orchard is one of the goals set in the environmental protection program for the City of Ljubljana 2014 - 2020. (1, 2 and 3)

Benacantil vegetation restoration project

The action proposed by the Municipal Technical Service of Parks and Gardens at the Department of the Environment, aims at the regeneration of the forest with the repopulation of pines of different ages, to imitate a mountain in a natural state with the plantation of the Cartagena Cypress and Tetraclinex articulata, which has a good adaptation to the environment. Several plots (Plots 3, 5, 6, 8 and 12 of the project) have been repopulated with shrubs and trees such as cypress, esparto, rosemary, tomillos, lentiscos, tetraclinex and palmito, in the solana area, deciduous and riparian species, and to other silvicultural treatments, which increases the variety of existing vegetation. (Ref. 1) In addition, the project contemplates the construction of two viewpoints (Ref 1, 3). A new irrigation system is put in place for the re-use of water for sustainable use and water savings. (Ref. 7)

Banks of the Ebro River

"After decades of abandonment and deterioration, Zaragoza took advantage of the opportunity of the Expo 2008, to form a new relationship with the Ebro River, transforming empty, inaccessible, degraded and unsafe banks into places of encounter and representation. Public works on the Ebro were designed as structures with various functions." (Ref.3)

FutureBuilt: Greenhouse in Nydalsveien

FutureBuilt is a program running between 2010-2020, with expectations to continue from 2021-2030 (Ref. 9). One of its projects consists of the construction of a large greenhouse in between a housing complex in an old industrial building. The greenhouse will be the centre of the building and provide a Mediterranean climate with a lot of green facades, green roofs and indoor vertical greeneries (Ref. 1). The nave of the complex will become a greenhouse and the natural gathering point for the residents. (Ref. 1, 3)

Water management in the Frihamnen river

Since 2012, Gothenburg has worked with the Rivercity, an urban development project in the city centre, that uses different ways of working, with innovation at the core of its urban transformations projects. Frihamnen is one of the RiverCity Göteborg most vital projects which aims to unify the centre of Göteborg across the river and out towards Kvillebäcken, Lindholmen and Backaplan (districts). The environmental goal is to create climate adaptation by flood control & stormwater management. Additional benefits of the project are to make the area more attractive and create recreational areas. As part of the BEGIN project, the Frihamnen project aims to use 'blue-green' solutions (i.e. Blue Green Infrastructure through Social Innovation). (Ref. 1, 2)
